Ive found over the years that most of the time a drive to a show/meet with like minded people or similar cars usually turns out to be more fun than the actual show

A convoy can be good fun if you're on a motorcycle. Better to go small than big though, and I try to ride with people I know and trust, makes it easier to manage, less chance of the group getting split up / lost / someone riding like a bell end etc.

I hate convoys...

Yes they're social and quite exciting and fun. But when your 20, convoys are a bit different. Everyone showing off, jumping red lights, stopping in the middle of the road waiting for cars at the back to catch up, its embarrassing and dangerous.

Besides I like to drive at my own speed/pace in the manor and route I choose. No thanks.

They're stupid if they get too big. I remember all of the Essex RSOC meeting at South Mimms services before shows, 100 lunatics all trying to show off to each other for an hour on a motorway and then all turning up at a gate at once isn't that entertaining.

We normally have about 10 cars, mainly because one person will have all of the tickets and passes, there will be a stall to set up, normally a couple of cars to get off of trailers and people who have to go through the drivers briefing. I agree that the meeting up in the morning, journey and setting up once there are normally where a lot of the giggles from the day are produced.

Plus we can show the newbies the shortcuts so that they can drive straight in through the gates rather than sit in miles of traffic (Silverstone is great for that) and we can blag more cars/people in without the correct tickets and passes if we're all in a group hehe

Got to say it really does have a lot to do with the types of car!

Two Morgans out for a blast, two old men enjoying life.

Three Morgans out for a blast, mini convoy looks quite cool and makes me smile

Last year on the M5 12+ Morgans all heavily packed with cases etc on the back, = Massive smiles all around.

Me and my mate going for a blast round the beacons, look like an odd couple with some t**t in his family car (Jaguar XF) trying to outrun a Z4, funny thing is even he is surprised how quick the car is.

Mates, knowing where they are going, (especially in my case) support moral and mechanical. It's good fun, what a bunch of boring old farts.

Convoy travelling is much more entertaining than going solo, just think...you have an audience to see your unreal driving skills and daring!
Some of the best times of my youth were travelling with a few others on wicked (for their day) 4 cylinder Japanese motorcycles, you know the ones, you don't pass one car on a short straight, you pass 5 or more....and then pull back onto the correct side of the road doin 200 km/h! What a rush that was, we'd stop for a smoke break and were all high as a kite on adrenaline....it felt soooo good to be alive!
If you have never experienced this kind of high you might be the very serious type of person, like an old person in a young body, unfortunately when we get a partner and kids responsible behaviour becomes more pronounced in ones riding/driving style, the good times are gone...but the flavour lingers on!
There was a movie made about the comradeship of driving in convoy, here's the theme song along with some shorts from the movie- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnJEeHND_lQ

Convoys are great fun as long as participants are of the correct frame of mind, ie respect for one another and the public, decent standard of driving, acting as a team. I've been involved in some very enjoyable convoys, and also some horrible ones. When it's done right, it's great fun.

Was in a couple of impromptu ones to and from Ford Fair at Silverstone. It was just a nice feeling being in between all the other cars like yours.

Might try and go up in a bigger group next year if i can drag the o/h out of bed

to me it's kinda like a track day - more fun with your mates.

however, convoys can be embarassing when you get tools trying to show off and driving terribly.

Its just a bit of fun. Especially if you are going to a show stand. Seeing a bunch of immaculate cars in series all arriving at the same time with enthusiastic owners is a spectacle and adds to the event for some.

Maybe Im just a child but being in convoy is alright as well if they are nice cars. Dont have to drive like a granny or a hoody to appreciate the camaraderie.

invariably. especially with a cheap car like the MX5, you just get a load of drift kids with them now.
it's why i don't bother anymore.

Not sure if serious? But just in case you are:

For fun
For friendship
So newbies know where they are going
For that early shared coffee at a motorway services with a bunch of like minded mates
When organising a stand at a show, its easier to have everyone turn up at a similar time, so all joining up at a point before makes organising it easier
Etc etc…
+1

Back in the early 80's when I was very active in Ford AVO OC, the fun bit was the convoy runs to and from what were otherwise fairly boring car shows.

That's just bull st being heavily involved within the mx5 group mainly the nutz forum the vast majority are not drift kids yes there are a few but not a great deal of them. The standard of events/runs/convoys through the forum is 2nd to none. Yes on the motorway/b roads etc will push on but around town is always sensible driving.

If everyone does the same as you none of the great events wouldn't happen.

My god this forum is full of grumpy old s with a hug chip on there shoulders.

If you have a display stand at a show its fairly essential you turn up at the same to get the stand organised.

Not a fan of this pussyfooting around at 50mph though.

What a fantastically stoopid question!

Same reason that me and the mates will go to the pub together or will go out on the bikes together... bit pointless going "Hey listen, we live in the same area and we're going to the same place to do the same stuff so you go now, I'll leave in an hour and Chris, you go in 10 minutes but go a totally different way"

I've just come back from Retro Rides at Shelsley in a convoy of four cars... because that's what mates do when they have a shared interest and a need to travel the location of said shared interest, that's why they're mates. Plus when st goes wrong, there's back up and it's generally a bit more interesting than doing 450 miles on your own.

The more I think of this, this more I genuinely don't understand why the question was even asked... guess the military and errrr, ants have been doing it wrong all these years.
