Golf GTI Mk4 180hp split pipe?

looking at another area of the engine a colleague pointed out this to me....



looks like a hose split and someone has used a bunch of sealant? Any advise on what this pipe does and what I need to replace it?

This is an AUQ engine.

Looks to me more like part no 2 that has split.
