I'm just looking at replacing our XC90 with something less costly to run. The XC90 has been a great car and has never been found wanting, but we no longer use it for the purpose we bought it (towing). It also excelled at long distance journeys but they are now taken care of with a different car.

We need a good sized family car that can be used for the school run (6 miles round trip twice a day, medium traffic), general domestic use of about 20 miles a day on Motorways and town centres and the usual garden centre/bike rides/shopping trips at the weekends. A supermini probably won't be big enough for all circumstances, not too interested in Ford/VX/French and would like to save a bit of dough on the RFL so if the car fits into the <£30 tax bracket all the better.

Currently considering the V50 1.6 DRIVe with a budget of up to £9k. I understand that published fuel figures are a bit optimistic but is 55 mpg achievable based on the above driving profile?

Anything else worth looking at? Prius and Insight have been mentioned - not completely sold on the idea though...

In laws have got a '62' S40 DRIVe.... Poodle about at a low rate of knots, but always average high 50s from mostly town trips. Solid, proven, old fashioned tech, but perfect for what you need it for IMHO. Good choice.
