Integration, it's a two-way street apparently.

Until about 10 seconds after the oil dries up, they'll be back to herding goats around the desert within a generation or two.

Westerners get paid massive sums of money to work out there.
Gotta take the rough with the smooth...

If you do go shopping with your wife don't go into women-only sections and definitely don't take pictures of the mutawa. Even the UK police don't like that.

The Mrs parents worked out there for a number of years in the '80's. Their opinions on the Saudis are enlightening. Safe to say they will not be going back there.

I know a number of people who have lived and worked out there and again not many of them have much good to say other than "Keep your head down, your mouth shut, cash the cheques and GTFO as soon as you can afford to."

I am sure that it is a lovely place if you are accustomed and in agreement with their laws and customs. If you are not then you really should stay somewhere like the UK where you are fairly sure that your wife will not return home from shopping with serious ankle injuries (inflicted by the religious police using a stick) because her skirt was an inch too high.

I honestly believe in the 'when in Rome' school of thought when visiting and living abroad. It is for that reason I will not set foot on their soil other than by accident of transit.

Exactly.
If you want to take the vast sums of money on offer you basically have to forget your Western human rights & STFU.

Hmm, maybe there's a market for ethically-sourced vegan petrol?

Lost count of the times I've gone on holiday with a friend who then starts arguing with local copper (unnecessarily in my opinion) and I have to do the 'my friends being a dick .. ignore him' routine so we both avoid a visit to the police station. And that's not to condone the Saudi regime in any way.

The irony with Saudi Arabia.

Lots of rich Saudis head over to Bahrain for the wknd for he whiskey n Asian or Russian 'working girls'

According to friends who have worked in KSA - ... Have experienced wilder booze n sex parties than anywhere - attended by Govt Saudis ( but on private non-local compounds).

So it's 'do as I say' when in public - not 'do as I do in private '

Is it really that different over here with our politicians and policy makers.

How many actually live by all the policies and rules they make up for the rest of us to abide by?
