Hi all,

I’m hoping someone may be able to help.
Looking at renting a car from Austin to Vegas but all i can find is run of the mill cars. The whole idea of driving was to do a real American road trip in a real American car. Something worth driving, not there version of a Focus.

Has anyone done a similar trip or know a company that may have cars like this that they will let across states?

Any help would be appreciated.

Loads of threads about muscle car hire. Have a look for "Hertz Adrenalin" collection.
Or better still, get a bike license and go on two wheels. Way better.

why not rent a hertz small car from your location to the nearest big airport or big city , they should have some fruity cars in stock

id suggest join flyertalk.com go to the car rental section and have a read , theres often codes or a fiddle to get around the one way fee's or get some money off - then when ready to book click through quidco for another 10% cashback

I too am planning an Austin to Vegas road trip. Directly after the Grand Prix.

You can find companies that will hire Mustangs for the trip but have decided a massive Cadillac will be the best tool for the job so that is what I am going for.

Beware one way fees on a rental like this, vary massively between rental companies and are not made that clear on sites like Expedia etc

Ben,

What companies have you found?

I’m still really struggling with this. Every time I email Hertz I get a different answer.

You can generally upgrade to something a bit more special at the larger airports. I booked a nasty Jeep thing and then swapped it for a Camero at Boston... had a choice of that or a Dodge Challenger. They also had a load of Mustangs, too. From memory that was booked with CarHire3000.com.

Hertz via Expedia is best for the Cadillac, but Expedia can't tell me if it includes the one way charge or not. Given this charge may range from $250 to $500 it is quite significant.

Rentalcars.com also seem to give good prices and state what the one way charge will be.

My trip is not until the end of October so I have not go too far down the road.

I tried many times to get a camaro ss convertable out from New York for a LA drop off, always not possible. Phoned the actual hertz office in New York and sorted.

That worked with Dollar in Vegas very easy as they had loads of Mustangs / Camaros to chose from. Mind you 'only' V6 3.7. Mind you a very good car (the Mustang) and much cheaper than you would get a V8.

This is PH, why the hell would you go to America and not hire a V8???

I'm going next month, hired a Camaro SS from the Hertz Adrenalin collection. Worked out to be around £40 a day with some random discount code and topcashback.

You're doing it all wrong. We just got back from Cancun, Mexico. We took a punt on an unspecified "intermediate" class car with Dollar and were rewarded with a battered Nissan Versa with 47,000km on it. About the only thing in it's favour was that it was so crap I was never worried about it being stolen no matter where we left it. No idea what engine it had but it really struggled it you asked it to actually move the vehicle forward with the AC on.

Well done on £40, they are normally about double that I think?
The V6 was still a lovely car and more than fast enough, but yes I would love a V8 at least for the engine character.

Thanks for all the replies. Still really struggling with this.

Cant find much to book online at all. Have called a few places and you just go round in circles, reservation centres systems can't book for a different drop off location, go back to the local branch and they just want to send you back to reservations.
Keep getting told I'm trying to book too far in advance, then get told the car i want is already booked for the dates i want. Crazy.

Finally found a Mustang online, booked it, only for it to be canceled a few days latter as the car is not on their books but external companies may list them.

Never thought this would ever be so hard.

Yeah, both hertz & avis sites are terrible for when trying to find 'interesting' cars, i've also not found it possible to use avios for premium cars with avis frown.
