Hi all.

I work in an HGV garage and I am thinking of reporting all the smoking members of staff for smoking in the work place.
There are a couple of reasons I am hesitant to do so - I am the 'new boy'. I've been there less than a year, and other members of staff are very much long-standing. And it'll be obvious who had blown the whistle.
Reasons I am wanting to report - it's fking disgusting and I am sick to death of breathing their smoke 6 days a week.
Despite omplaining on a daily basis (out loud to everyone. Including 2 levels of 'management') it never changes.
One lad has taken to smoking outside now, but I can see that stopping as the weather turns this autumn.
It gets to the point where I start wondering if by any good fortune all the smokers could lose control of their vehicles on the way to work and end up having to re-trade to an office job miles away from me. It's not the fking 30's anymore.
So does anyone have an experience of tackling these problems, and advice for me to do so?
Please hold the ''man up and get over it" comments from all the smokers. I can't be arsed with them.

Thanks in advance.

I would report them and see what happens, if nothing changes leave. You shouldn't have to passive smoke to do your job.

I've read up a little since creating this topic. Seemingly there's an 'up to £2500' for companies who knowingly allow it to happen. And a £50 fine to an individual caught smoking.

Okay. Softly softly does it. Stop complaining. Don't mention smoking for 8 to 10 weeks. Then phone local council, and report them as "a concerned customer"

I'll try 4 - 5 weeks, lol. I'll give that one a shot, thank you.

You are in a no win place. If you make the call you might want a back up plan jobwise.

I work in a garage, one of the other three mechanics smokes as he pleases. I don't particularly care.

Have you considered finding another job?

Doesn't ethanol burn invisibly as well? The victim would just think he'd died of the meat sweats. OP just make sure you plant a huge beef sandwich on him before you do the deed.

Why not start gently and report your employer for a lack of PPL for the radio you are listening to at work.

Let us know how it goes.. wink

Why is it you want to report them? Are you in such close proximity to them that it's causing you issues?

As an aside, it took me <10 seconds to find out where you work so you might want to be a little more discrete in future!

is it a workshop? Ie you work as a mechanic or similar? If so I'm surprised the company allows smoking to go on. Perhaps write to a higher-up manager and suggest they create a sheltered designated smoking area as a few employees including you simply don't enjoy the second-hand smoke.

Yep, gotta agree with the above, I found your workplace within like 5 seconds too. As you work with vehicles, your colleagues may well be on here and if the majority smoke and management don't take your side as you suggest, then I really suggest being more discrete, as previous posters suggested should you want to make a complaint.

However I think your colleagues will still pretty much know who reported them if you go the legal route, so if it is truly unbearable for you then probably finding another job would be wise, as you are the 'new boy' and if all your colleagues hate you......life will be grim.
