Do you think there is any benefit using oil filter magnets? such as these http://shop.motorsport-developments.co.uk/oil-filt...

For me personally yes I've always used them. The one's I have on my SEiGHT Westfield and race car I got from the States years a go they fit in between the sandwhich plate and the oil filter and are finished in anodised blue but u can't get them anymore the one on the Tam I got on line was A Filtermag from the states and I paid £52 in 2011 know Racing Green sell them at extortionate £70 + delivery

The ones you've hi-lighted look way too small tbh

There is one in the sump which is removed when changing oil.
Personally i think there is no benefit for the speed six using these "external" magnets.

And if you will find cuttings on the magnet of the oil drain plug then you already have a problem.

You will always find particules of swarf or fines on the sump magnets that's what they're there for as the engine wears it's when you get the big items is the time to worry.... The external magnet is there to catch the other particulates that never get near the very small sump plug magnets.

The filter magnet covers a big area of the filter and its a much smaller area that the oil passes through compared to a sump and yes your dry sump system has sump not in the traditional sense but still a sump no the the less so there's a much higher chance of catching much more of the fines than the sump plug. when the car is serviced and the filter is replaced the particulates are gone. Re-attach the filter magnet on to the new filter and away you go again.

Show me two cutted filters of the same engine, one with magnets and one without. If there is any difference, i will come to UK with a crate of beer.
To me it's something you have to believe in...

Get yourself an Oberg filter, then it is easy to look at what's lurking within the oil......

Im using a filter mag running in my rebuilt engine. I can almost guarantee you, from these engines there will be some metallic material floating about in the system. I have a head on my bench with cams and followers from the biggest speed six rebuilder and the rear two followers do show slight marring. That would cause fine material to enter the system. How quickly that maring would progress is anyones guess.. 20k, 50k who knows. This is why you can get that fine metallic sludge or film on that sump magnet.

TVR apparently tested the head submerged in oil.... The materials used for the followers and cams are only part of the issue.

Just curious, would these metallic particles pass through the standard oil filter?

Filter magnets may be "over the top" (sump plug magnet sufficient?) but why not, can do no harm scratchchin


Oberg filter looks interesting, could be a good solution for power steering systems rather than Magnefine filter?

Phillpot, we've run Obergs on our pulling tractors for eons - one filters the turbo oil system, the other cleans engine oil. Its the first place we look after an event. We don't use a bypass, but watch oil pressure (125 cold, 90 hot and any fall off in pressure demands an immediate filter check. A magnet wont catch aluminium from our con rods or pistons, nor would it be big enough. Can scare you too though, lol
