Hi,

This is my first thread so I apologise if it's in the wrong area. I'm British and looking to buy (preferably) a Jap car. Why? Who knows, they've always seemed appealing to me. I really like the idea of saving up for an R34 skyline or a supra, but the problem is the engine size is too large.

As I'm still a student at uni, I can't afford to run those types of cars. I am looking to buy nothing larger than a 1.4. But I'm very picky on the shape of the car. Can anyone suggest anything that isn't so common please?

I know this is vague, but any help / advice would really be appreciated!

Thanks in advanced!

Maybe investigate Japanese Kei cars; many to choose from style wise but many are rare as hens teeth: CLICK.

Imports will be expensive to insure, my advice would be buy something cheap and cheerful and save your money , once uni is over you should be able to afford something nice

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far!

The toyota sera is EXACTLY the sort of thing I'm after, except the engine is still too large for me at the moment. Ideally it should be a 1.2 - 1.3. Me saying a 1.4 is pushing is, but if the car is perfect then that's not much more of a stretch. But a 1.5 is definitly too much for insurance and to generally run being the cheap student I am haha

Had a look at the kei cars, non seem to match up but thank you nonetheless

Definitely looking for some more suggestions, or just a list and I can have a google myself, cheers!

It's not about engine size, it's about insurance groups - engine size has some baring on power, but that doesn't always make a difference when insurers get involved...

How about a Mitsi Colt? 1.3 and 1.6 available, in hatches, can be bought for less than £1k, should be reliable and cheap to run, bit different to a civic?

yeah had a look at the colt, just wasn't the right style for me unfortunately. I was picky about the engine size for fuel consumption, having spent £50 a week on my 1.1 (I accelerate a lot and drive on a motorway) I didn't want my new car to have an even more expensive petrol tariff.

Decided to go with a 1.3 Proton Gen 2 =)

- found it on by looking at similar cars from suggestions so not wasted time!

Haha I know!

but when I stumbled upon the gen 2, it was just so perfect. I only originally said japanese cars because I'd never buy a German car, and am quite familiar with fords and vaxhual/opel, so thought it would be good to venture out to the Jap area :P

Had a look at the glanza/starlet - looks a bit like the civic type R? fairly sure I'm still set on the proton gen 2 though. It has really low insurance and tax, and is a 1.3 (my engine spec requirement) and I like the way it looks in general! and it's much newer than the other cars we were talking about before which is always a bonus

The Starlet is a lot smaller than a Civic and even the turbo is still a 1.3 and they can quite easily be made into little rocket ships.

Student at uni yet insurance is too high on anything higher than a 1.4?

Either you've made a dozen claims in the past or you live in one of the worst post code areas ever!

I'm British, I'm going to assume you're not. Insurance for going drivers is always in the thousands here, not cheap at all and students here don't get much money.

Just for the record, I've had no claims at all/accidents for 2 years and insurance on a 1.2 is about £1600

I too am British.

Insuring my 330bhp modified RX-7 when I was 20 cost me £50 more per annum than the stty 1.4 Corsa it replaced...

Now, 2 years on and I can get insured on a Noble M12 for £700 less than an Impreza WRX... Thats the way insurance works in the UK, entirely based on statistics!

Had a look at an rx-7. Thought it might be an insurance exception because it 'only has' a 1.3l and the quote for that was 4.5k

How long have you been driving for and how old are you now? If you don't mind me asking

Don't mind you asking at all!

22 years old, live in Essex currently running an RX-7 and RX-8 on a multicar policy for a total of £1420 with Admiral.

Got my license in 2009 at 17, been driving for just under 5 years, yet somehow have 5 years NCB. And then 3 years NCB from a different policy.

Had a 1.4 Clio and a 1.4 Corsa until I got my RX-7, then a few months later got the RX-8.

My carpool is here: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyI...

The thing you need to try and do is look at cars that aren't very common as a big part of the premium is based on how many of that car has claimed/ had a claim against it. For example a 2.0 Laguna might be cheaper to insure than a 1.4 Corsa (it probably isn't but you get what I mean?) as a lot of young drivers own Corsas so there will be a lot of claims involving them.

Is the correct answer, insurance is baffling. Performance cars can be extremely cheap to insure for young lads.

Would you take a glance at Mitsubishi Colt? Great little cars IMO.
