While we are on the subject, do we know if there will be a premium for monthly direct debits, and if so, how much? I did look but could not find it.
The present 40% APR charge for paying the year's tax in two 6 month instalments is daylight rubbery.
5%
That's better - only 10.9% APR then. And convenient.
The maths is too hard for me, but does that really come out at 10.9% APR - you wouldn't be paying the last payment until month 12, for example?
yup. I checked it twice. I am assuming they direct debit you on or before the first day of the month.
ignore the first 1/12th, it is on the same day you would have paid the full 12 months.
So you are "borrowing" the other 11/12ths for periods ranging from 1 month to 11 months. Average period 6 months.
Using £120 as the car tax figure (makes the maths easier), under direct debit you will be paying £120 plus 5% = £126 in total, £6 "interest". So in effect you are paying £6 to borrow £110 for an average of 6 months, which equates to £12 to borrow £110 for 12 months. £12/£110 = 10.9090909%
Thanks - I know APR is the "true" rate but it always seems more straightforward to me to think in flat rates. APR has the advantage that it takes account of fees which might otherwise be hidden, but there aren't any in this case.

I found a calculator which shows the APR is 9.1% using your numbers.

If one cannot afford 12 months' VED in one hit then one cannot afford to run a car.

Don' t ask me how I know this!

I'd agree but some people are crap at budgeting or fully signed up to shortsightedness. Like my missus mum. Who just puts 20 quid a go in the 5 series. Or my mate who just won't pay lump sums no matter how often you explain it's cheaper than monthly

Today I'll be taking the tax disc out of my windscreen.

Just a reminder to all that you can do the same if you so wish.

Apathy rules!

Just back from a dog walk and the only car I saw sans tax disc (apart from my own) was a 64 - reg near a Ford garage which may be new and never have been issued with one.

Or perhaps folk are so attached (see what I did there?) to their discs after so many years . . .

most people will probably get rid the next time they clean the car. Hardly a must do on most people's list hehe

I wonder how many people will just keep as a bit of nostalgia?

Mine will stay in indefinitely as it's too much effort to go and remove it, especially as the holder will probably leave gunk all over the windscreen anyway!

So, what is now stopping a scrot finding a car of the same model/colour as his one (which doesn't have an MOT, tax or insurance) and nicking the plates. He doesn't even have to worry about nicking/forging a tax disc any more....

The poor scrot won't be able to tell if the original was taxed, have some sympathy.

Now that you don't need to show a tax disc, how about actually showing a *Special* tax disc? maybe similar to the first one your car would have worn? or even something from way-back-when. that would certainly turn the heads of the unknowing MOP's.

Check out www.poplargreg.com my vehicles are already wearing a *special* one.
