reminds me of the F-Type V8 vs AM V8VS reviews
No contest the Porsche (or Jaguar) is the 'better' car in every respect but you would still choose the Aston :-)

Love that colour on the V12.
Hate the black chav wheels.
I would still have the Aston over the Turbo ironically, as they are both in essence GT cars.
Had a V12V, and as a GT car, was fine, but no way is it 'fun' , in the manner of the 991 GT3.
The depreciation however is stratospheric, and its heavier than the moon.
The Turbo does nothing for me, just a very accomplished GT charger.

Just out of curiosity I sometimes look at other car forums on the Pistonheads site.
I can't help but notice that on the Porsche General forum, the top post that has been stickied is a poll for whether your "996 or 997 has had to have a major engine rebuild", seemingly due to IMS or scored bores? What on earth is going on there? Have I been so engrossed in AM things that I've missed some major drama in 911-world?????

Yup, 30-40K miles on a 3.4 996 engine and wollop, engine starts consuming water. Had a lot of problems getting the dealership to even acknowledge that there was a problem let alone fix it under the extended warranty. Not aware of any issues with the engine in the turbo's or GT3's which are made of stronger stuff (except of course recent 991 issues!)...I can't help but notice that on the Porsche General forum, the top post that has been stickied is a poll for whether your "996 or 997 has had to have a major engine rebuild", seemingly due to IMS or scored bores? IMS, RMS and scoring are all well known issues on 996/997's
They a low percentage but it just goes to prove the bomb proof perception of Porsches is not always true
My business partners 997 has been a right PITA with loads of issues, the OPC has been terrible and now it's out of Porsche warranty it goes to avert reputable indie

A pal of mine had a 996 4S and the pistons were found to be rattling around like a tin can down an alley. He then moved onto a 996 Turbo, which has a different engine apparently and is better, but even so - there's always something that the thing is unhappy about.
Still, the government are banning high powered hair dryers soon. (He says, hastily getting in a dig before AM go the turbo route )

Said by the man who's Aston has been fault free.. NotI know you're commenting on porsche perception rather than a comparison but it raises an interesting point. Some cars of either make have next to no problems, and some seem to have loads - and it's not the owner having heard RobivesoldmysoultothegermansGT(S) talk about the difference between his two cars. It's as if once problems start the whole car starts to fall apart.
You are quite right
I've lost count of the number of cars I've had or run through a business and many "urban myth" has been debunked by them
I have had;
Interesting Volvos & Hondas
Unreliable BMW and VW's
Mercs with good build quality
Reliable Rovers
Good Nissans
Poorly built VW's
But the some have lived up to the common perception
Renos that fall to bits but are fun
Subarus that are super reliable but a bit quirky
Hondas that are reliable
Jags and Land Rovers that fall to bits and need loss of warranty work
BMWs that handle well
Fords that are underestimated
Each one is only a snapshot but the interweb can now turn those in to a bigger problem than they actually are
The impact is down to how the dealer/manufacturer deal with it
Porsche/Toyota do it better than VAG/Aston IME

Oh and coming back to Aston
Using this forum as a snapshot I can think of at least 13 people off the top of my head that have bought new Astons in the last two years who have had serious issues with them. That is a LARGE proportion of the factories output going out wrong when you consider;
1 PH is a very small portion of UK owners
2 There is a higher proportion of "lurkers" than there are poster on here who just don't post up issues
3 80% of the output goes abroad so is unlike to be heard about on here
I really do hope AMGs involvement and Andy Palmer as CEO can sort these issues and elevate Aston to the levels buyers expect of one of the most premium cars out there!

I had a reliable Alfa - with that sort of luck I should probably have bought a lottery ticket instead
I had two remarkably reliable Alfas and the least reliable car we've ever owned was a VW Passat TDI (and that includes the V8 MGB). More predictably, the crown for most reliable goes to a Honda. whoami said:

That depends what you paid for it.
You're right, the guy before me lost over £50k in 11 months and 800 miles ....I only lost £22k in 14 months. Bargain eh....Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
