Is an R8 a Supercar?
Discussion
I teach/lecture Product Design to both children and adults. I have had a think about this arguement which is omnipresent on this forum and have come up with a quick acronym. See what you think, but remember you have to judge a car in its era and to be a Supercar it must fit all of the criteria in the acronym.
Tell me what you think, which I am sure you will.

To me a major flaw of the R8 is that it's so ugly. A supercar is supposed to be something you put a picture of on your wall. I saw one yesterday parked amongst ferraris and Aston martins and it just looked rubbish. No better really than the TT. For the same reason I look at a 355 as being a supercar but an FF not. Even though the FF is in a completely different world performance wise

You are basing too much on the aesthetics in my humble opinion.Behemoth said:
Ro55a, you've nailed it. There's nothing in that check list I'd dispute. So where, in your fine pedagogic opinion, does that put the Aldi R8?
It meets most of SPEC, not convinced on the F. Door handles just for examples are easily accessed, easy to see out of, ergonomic controls and interfaces fully considered, ride height is not too low, seating position is good, reasonable boot space. I'd say its a NO.ro55a said:

So on that basis many supercars these days will get excluded!

I see where this one is going in comparison to the R8 and the Audi/Lamborghini connection. Take, just for arguements sake the E for Exclusive. How can an R8 be truly exclusive when it wears the same face as an entry level A series car and a 4x4, not to mention the rest of the range? An R8 uses the exact same design language as an entire range of vehicles, its form has been compromised by its function, the function being one of communicating a brand. This would be comparable to VW releasing a new high end sports car and it wearing the face of a Golf. The Gallardo beats the R8 hands down on that front (excuse the pun) alone. The Gallardo also has a design language, one steeped in Exclusive Supercars......there are no Lamborghini Mini vans or A series cars. By the same logic is the Gallardo a supercar ro55a?
