I think you'll find that majority of racers are self funded, with some lucky ones getting sponsorship to help pay for what they do. There is money for going rounds, prize money and if your lucky maybe some travel money for the pros (which probably doesnt cover 20% of the travel costs for most racers from what i can tell). You have to pay to enter your team, and for electric at meetings at pod, getting to the track costs, maintenance costs, fuel and oil costs, repair costs and of course the cost of initially building the car. There are so many costs that everyone spends so much money going racing, and from my understanding pretty much no one is getting close to breaking even.
My weekend was frankly a disaster. Only one qualifier and out in the first round. Changed the motor after damaging it in Q1, missed Q2 due to the engine swap and then we were chasing oil pressure and mag problems so missed Q3 and Q4 as well. Got the car ready to run late on Saturday, but I was late on the tree in eliminations against Duncan and the car wasn't pulling as hard as it should have been. Duncan was way out ahead and I had no hope of catching him so I clicked it off before half track to avoid damage. But it wasn't to be. Rods out, block trashed. One of those meetings to forget.
