A lots of the terms are the same across MMOs, so I won't bore you with those. In terms of what is specific to Destiny, the main ones currently are;
PvE - Player vs Environment/Engine
Any content that involves the player fighting the in-game enemies or mechanics.
PvP - Player vs Player
Any content that involves you in direct combat with other players.
NF - Nightfall
A high level strike with extra modifiers 9including the titular Nightfall that returns you to orbit if the whole team dies)and a high chance of rewarding exotic tier weapons and armour upon completion.
VoG - Vault of Glass
The games first (and currently best)six man raid activity. Takes place on Venus, sees you infilitrate and defeat Atheon, a being who can literally manipulate time.
TDB - The Dark Below
The first expansion pack.
CE - Crota's End
The games second (and lesser)six man raid activity. Takes place on the Moon, you fight Crota, a hive God.
HoW - House of Wolves
The second expansion pack.
ToO - Trials of Osiris
3v3 PvP on rotating maps.
PoE - Prison of Elders
3 Man horde mode, five rounds against enemies with objectives to complete as well.
FB - Fatebringer
BH - Blackhammer
VoC - Vision of Confluence
Gjally - Gjallarhorn
IB - Ice Breaker
Various exotic/raid weapons that are mentioned often enough to warrant an acronym of their own.

It is quite fun to use but not worthy of the exotic slot. Having said that, there are some monster PvP players that are very good at using it! A perk is returning a shot/pellet to the magazine and given how unstable it is, this happens quite frequently. People therefore pull the trigger when turning a corner and BANG.
If you're not into collecting exotics then I wouldn't bother.
Cool thanks - I hardly use them of course, but I think I'd rather have the special ammo synths over a lack lustre exotic No chance I'd use it in PvP, MIDA or Hawkmoon would be in the exotic slotIf you're not into collecting exotics then I wouldn't bother.

Certainly have a crack at Trials, I will at some point - seems to be the quickest way to amass etheric light too if you still need it. That guy you met via LFG sounds like he could make it easier for you at least.
As an aside, is Pocket Infinity worth pursuing? I'm still at the dismantle rare fusion rifles stage (one away), but I've read you need to hand over 50 special ammo synths to finish it which seems a waste if the gun is garbage (not in the least interested in having it for the sake of it). Opinions out there suggest don't bother with it, what do you all think?
It's not Pocket Infinity thats needs 50 Special Ammo synths, thats for the Invective Bounty so you can finish the PI bounty without worrying about usuing all your synths! As an aside, is Pocket Infinity worth pursuing? The LFG guy said he'd give me a run this week. By all accounts, if he's as good as he suggests, then he and his teammate should be able to carry even a below average PvPer like me through!

Yes, you are right! It is the Invective bounty that needs the synth packs - I've got them both going at the moment and clearly got one confused with the other Invective I'll have though despite the spend on synths, because that's a decent shotgun to haveThe LFG guy said he'd give me a run this week. I was bored so ended up responding to an LFG doing normal Crota. Joined up and ran it with Warlock, ignoring the typical obnoxious squeaker, and it all went smoothly. When we got to sword, squeaker said he'd do it. He died a couple of times, obviously not aware of all the mechanics as his timing was just horrible, and it clearly wasn't going to work. Feeling confident after my recent attempts at sword bearing, I said I'd do it.
Most of the group opted for left-side strategy, so we managed to down the swordbearer at the bottom of the steps. I picked it up, and called for rockets the moment I hit the platform, swinging towards Crota and getting some good damage on him. Swing away, call for rockets, repeat. Nicely done. Hmm, sword still active. Try again? Why not.
Got Crota down in one sword. Yes, it was only normal mode, but I was feeling pretty pleased with myself after that, even if I'm not sure I could do it again!

In a staggering display of boring-ness, here's the line up for this week:
Weekly heroic - is Archon Priest. Yep we had it last week and here it is again this time with Juggler
Nightfall - good old Taniks and the HoW strike, you didn't need to be a mind reader to know that was coming. Arc burn, Juggler and Brawler are the "fun" elements this week folks
Glad I got the weekly done last night now as I'm not a huge fan of that strike - void burn meant me and a couple of randoms blew through it in no time at all. So that's the Invective bounty all but done at least

Some sarcasm and some genuine admiration for the young Glaswegian.
Basically, a 12 year old lad bought Destiny and has been desperate to play the raids but none of his mates have the game so he's been confined to solo stuff. My fireteam was left to public and when I was walking around the Tower he jumped into it without a clue as to who I was or what I was up to. Lucky for him I was about to join 4 others to hit up a VoG run, so he finally got to do a raid.
The surprising thing is he knew everything about it. What to do and when, the names of the enemies and the order they appear, even how to use the relic, as he had been religiously watching YouTube vids to see what all the fuss was about. He was so happy to be in the raid that he said he was going to cry and kept enthusiastically jumping all over the place.
Whilst we were all taking the pee out of how young and squeaky he was, there were a couple of parts where he outlasted the lot of us.

It took twice as long as with the first three people, one of them left, and the remaining 2 of us went to make a drink only to be returned to orbit, so we then had to get back up to Skolas to go again! so technically did it twice as with our first attempt on him, he was probably a Gally away.
