Just wondering what you guys went for after an e92 m3? Mine is 5 years old in January, never given any trouble and still under extended warranty. Probably worth 30k in a trade in, I'd I could stay around that level or stick up to another £10k ish in.

Fuel consumption unimportant, have a panda for the daily. 4 seats not essential. Second car. But of fun. Bit of touring. Also able to turn up a car show/pistonheads meet.

I had a drive in an rs6 v10. Huge presence and desirability, and was fantastic till the first corner when it went all wooden on me.

Looked at the golf R but just seemed so 'ordinary" after the m3.

Went out in a cayman R at the weekend, really wanted to love this one, the handling was absolutely sublime as expected but the engine felt flat after the v8, and the pdk was not as good as the dct, almost too smooth, where the dct bangs and feels alive if that makes sense. Lovely car but another £12k on top of the m3? Felt more of a sideways step.

The best one I've looked at so far has been the wild card choice of a corvette grand sport manual. Proper mans car to drive, very analogue and very enjoyable.

C63's are great but that was my last car, better in terms of noise and power but lacks the handling/steering feel and gear change. Probably a better car till 7/10ths then the m3 is better above that.

The new m4 is lovely but outside budget and don't want a large finance thing.

Tempted to get my annual service done, a couple of tyres and run it another year. When you actually go looking there is very little out there that gives as much for the money in terms of noise, reliability, speed and general fun to drive without spending a fortune.

You could wait for the M4 prices to fall, as they are so new the drops in price will be larger than any drops in your used car price - I'd imagine.

Have you considered an RS5? I've had 2x E92s...I traded the first one in for an RS5 and whilst it's not as responsive and (in my opinion) has less presence, it makes a lovely sound. Internally they're probably more highly specced as well.

Never considered an rs5, truthfully I had discounted them based on the reviews.

M4 certainly appeals, 2 years till they're 40k?

How about a V10....either M5 or M6.

A touring M5 will be totally left wing but still awesome.

Similar dilemma. V8 vantage? 997 C2S? 997 turbo? GTR?

I've been thinking about selling my E92 M3 too too free up some cash. Been in BMW to get valuation but set my eye on a very nice 63 plate 335i M Sport with all the options (except sunroof) ticked.

I'll admit it'll be very hard replacing the M3 (unless money no object ofc :P)... you'll need some time to warm up to her especially if you've came from a turbo car but once you get it you'll really enjoy the experience of driving the car.

Regarding valuation as a comparison mine is 28k miles 60 plate Comp Pack and I struggle to get over £29,000; that's from dealers though.

£29k seems very low considering there's plenty of 12 plate ones advertised at £10k+ more than that. I've a feeling they are valuing mine at £27k (19k miles) and adding £2-3k as an over allowance.

m5 touring a good shout, Could be a bit of work finding a good auc one, don't know if I'd chance it with no warranty.

997.2 great cars, problem is I had a 996tt a couple of years back which I loved, don't think I could go onto a base car.

Apologies - I meant to say 60 plate not 63. Just unsure to sell or p/x as it's painful to loose ~7k in less that 1 year...

I would've suggested RS6 (saloon if you can find a decent one) but it seems you don't really like the driving experience. Depends on your budget maybe something like R35 GTR? Loved my last one was painful experience selling.

Sounds like a plan to me. Change when you find something worth changing for, not just for the sake of changing. All IMO of course.

You don't have to spend more to get more....

997c2s
E60 m5
C63
Rs4

These can all be had for £20k. Pocket the rest and blow on good holidays or something.

Alternatively leasing is an option, there were new m5s about for £600pm.

I went to a Gen 1 turbo after mine. I too tried a golf R with a view to running it along with the M3 but I found it quite boring. I had the same idea with a Mini JCW but my girlfriend did not like driving it whereas I though it was very entertaining. I also tried a 997 GTS which was lovely but the engine felt 'flat' compared to M3. Handling and ride was in a different league though.

The C63 coupe (with PP and LSD) and M5 were really good fun but were not for me because of the gearboxes (both were great to drive).

The RS4 is a very good drive but it feels a little blunt after the M3.

In an ideal world I would have kept my M3 and bought a GT3.

My car was an 09 with 55k and it was valued at 25k for trade in.

in brief...

I sold my manual E92 nearly 3 years ago and have spent that time chopping and changing....in order

Clio 182
987 Cayman S
E46 CSL
Impreza 330s
996 C4S

In the run up to the next purchase I have test driven

GTR (100% Effective, 0% Personality)
M235i (Nice, great chassis, but just isn't the real deal. As per BMW's idea, it truly feels like a diet M)
C63 (Lovely car, great sound outside but I was unimpressed from inside cabin. Not quite as dynamic as the M3)
981 Cayman S (Very nice car, PDK is too "smooth" for me, doesn't feel sporty enough but makes it to short list for a second drive now prices dropped)

Current Short List/To Test Drive
F10 M5
F8x M3
981 Cayman S
E92 M3 DCT Comp Pack

In Summary, I fully expect to me driving the last in that list at the moment.

PS All Audis are discounted. Having driven RS4, RS6, TT and I have concluded I prefer cars that go around corners. I am biased but they are all far too understeery, laughably so in the case of the previous gen 6.

I went from e92 m3 to an M135i, but only because the m3 was an everyday car for me, so in that role, the m135i offers 80-90%% of the m3 for significantly less running costs.

If it was a car for weekends, I dont think I'd be looking at any BMW, they're too ordinary (which is a good thing when you want one car to do everything, but not when you want a weekend more special car).

The corvette could be a good option,or Nissan GTR (probably not for me though, dont like 4wd) , porsche 997? How about an older Gallardo? a bit pricey to run maybe, but lots of character.

I know a chap that went from an E9* M3 to a 640D & is now about to change to a 135i.

He loved the M3 but doesn't really miss it, think he's looking forward to the 135i & I can understand why! He considered a Golf R but ultimately it's just a Golf I guess.

You make a very valid point regards a BMW as a weekend car and I ran my old Z4M as a weekender and I couldn't agree more because they just lack soul and overall specialness, BMW do make mostly very good daily drivers but for a weekend car you need a manufacturer that offers thrills and excitement and something that makes you want to jump in and drive it just for the sake of it and a BMW just doesn't do that for me.

Know where your coming from OP, M cars are always so hard to replace as they do so many things so well, Audi R8 or 997 C2s gen II are my thoughts. M4 isn't ticking my boxes at all but yet to drive one.

+1 this. I've just sold my e46 M3, a few months after taking a M135i on. The e46 m3 has always been a second car, but it's just not special enough to make me want to drive it over the M135i most of the time.

Before my main car was a Ford KA, so the M3 felt like an occasion.

I might end up in a westy or an Atom. Once the M135i is off lease, I'll probably go for a new M3 or 997 911 as an only car.

This is true and you read so many people with the dilemma who own a E46 M3 as a daily and they struggle to find something that offers the same all round package and its why the M3 overall wins so many fans as they do seem to tick all the right boxes.

I think if I was the OP I would be looking at Porsche/Aston/Corvette/Lotus or something that has something a little different about it.
