Let's take a 3-series, because it's easy to do:

335xi 335xd
0-62 5,0 4,8
HP 306 313
L/100km 7,6 5,4
CO2 178 143

The petrol is 40% higher, at 20k/year miles (hardly a huge number?), it's not hard to work out that might easily be £800/year!
On top of that, most taxing in most countries works on CO2.

So, in my eyes, you REALLY have to want a petrol engine to justify it.
I love my bike and petrol car, I do think it offers a feel and a noise you won't find in a diesel, I really do.
Yet for a car like this, you'd have to do some serious man maths to make petrol "work". And then settle for the slower, less refined car that's more expensive to run.
It ain't that simple, though.

Real-world fuel consumption vs the tested official economy - this variance differs by model.
Diesels are less efficient in very cold weather.
Diesel costs more per litre than petrol (in the UK at least).
Diesel car's list price is often more than the equivalent petrol.
Different residuals for petrol vs diesel.

Aside from all that, driving a brand new 335 BMW for 20k miles per year is going to cost what, maybe £6-8k per year all in? Given that cost level, paying a premium of several hundred quid for the pleasure of a petrol engine (if that is the person's preference) is by no means some crazy man maths.

I saw one of these while travelling along the Fosseway a couple of weeks ago: it was black and looked unbelievably dull. The only reason I noticed it is because I thought it odd that somebody had put DLRs on such on old car. So disappointing. Hopefully other colours suit it better, but having just revisited the press images I don't hold out much hope.

Interesting, I recently saw one in metallic Red (launch colour?) and thought it looked superb. I thought how much better than in some of the pics which give the impression of a scaled down XF with an Audi A5 rear end -it looked very wide and low, almost coupe-ish.

In the metal it looked really sharp and modern with a pronounced flick to the edge of the bootlid which reminded me of an M3 CSL. The wheel to arch relationship (i think the youngsters call it 'stance') was good too, although I'm sure it was on 19 or 20" alloys.

I guess black can disguise a shape somewhat and make a car look a bit generic.

I hope I see it the same way when I see a non-black model in the metal. I actually felt disappointed given how much hype there had been around it and how good modern Jaguars look. Fingers crossed!

Similar feelings here. I followed a silver one yesterday and it took me a while to register that it was such a significant new car. I agree on the A5 look and from the front it was a more chiselled XF.

Unfortunately, conservatism is essential to win in the fleet market.

Fair point. But the strange thing is that most people don't even bother to work out what running a diesel will actually save them and then look at the saving in the context of the overall cost of motoring. It's usually a few hundred quid except for people who do lots of miles. If that amount of money is a concern, don't buy a new car, let alone a new Jag!

Plus, for emissions reasons, BMW petrol engines have a top of the throttle pedal lag that their diesel engines lack. Given that cornering enjoyment is throttle control, that makes the decision for me, despite me loving petrol engines and being uninterested in diesel - my love of corners overshadows both.

Has anyone actually tested this car? Announced/launched 5 months ago and no magazines have driven it yet?

It won't be driven by the press for a bit yet, not until they start building production models.

Generating awareness and interest in something brand new for the company with no curecnt sales in the category to cannibalise.

Sat in an XE today.

Did someone forget to tell them at Jaguar that they sell a premium product? I thought I'd stepped into Kia or a Hyundai.

Simply awful. Poor materials, horrible design, cheap looking...

Audi and BMW interior designers must be laughing their heads off.

Oh dear that doesn't sound good. With a new A4 on the way, a refresh on the already new C-class mooted and the LCI 3 series coming soon, I do think that Jaguar would have been better to do an "Apple" and announce and ship rather than this hype building bks it's just a rep mobile after all.

You can bet that ze Germans will make sure their cars are faster, better equipped and more efficient than before as they will do everything to stop JLR making headway in this sector.

Still can't make my mind up on those rear lights. They should have made them a little thinner.

Lets hope they do their usual trick of minor facelifts every year or two.
