Don't want to turn this thread into Golf R vs... that has been done to death thanks! this is about how people are getting on with their R's

Has anyone been tempted by these new wave of remaps/piggybacks etc? Given the standard power, not sure the chassis or brakes could cope with too much more without getting yourself into some bother...

Thanks
G

exactly. Mrs 2CV "doesn't give a st about cars" but seems to be borrowing mine more and more often, leaving me with her C1 furious

yes very tempted - not had a car in over a decade that hasn't been "optimised".

AMD and APR offer a piggyback solution - the former is quoted at 350bhp costing £499 and the latter 370bhp costing ......£1945!!

I think I may ask AMD if I can try before I buy and have it on their rollers and them make a decision.

I would put the REVO map on but they have an issue on the DSG cars that remains unresolved for now.

Hell yeah I'm liking mine smile 12.4s at Santa Pod...

Didn't get a chance to go at full power unfortunately. The weather situation thwarted those intentions. There is definitely more to be had. No bad for a little hatchback...

Just too many creases down the side for me, but that's the same for all Mercs at this time.

The interior is very low-rent, and for me (6'2") the bit above the driver's door is too low for getting in and out. I hired an A180d, and kept hitting my head. Just no need. The screen, as said, is just plain crap. The steering column controls are awful. And why the fk do they do that wierd thing with the brake pedal to aid hill starts??

ETA, just speced one up. I still prefer my Jag any day over an A45.

presumably the DSG has a relatively restrictive max torque limit for those interested in modding, or am i misunderstanding?

My thoughts were more along the lines of how dull that looks to drive. Manual not as fast but at least you get to do something while sitting behind the wheel. smile

It's not exactly a dull car regardless. Each to their own anyway.

Not sure it would be. I am sure I read that the new R400 (if they make it) will have the same DSG box as the R. I notice that the tuning companies are also looking to develop a remap for the DSG, to make it shift quicker and be more responsive. For now, I am happy with performance. Also as it is a lease car, probably won't go down this route.

I would however consider a R400 in two years time, if it ever gets into production - 400hp in a Golf is insane!

I think the DGS box shifts pretty quick, and also very smoothly. A lot quicker than manual so its achilles heel if it has one is not shift speed. I can only assume that's for those trying to shave off a tenth or something. Not sure how the 2.0TFSi would fare with 400bhp.

Hi all,

Got around 2,000 on her now, however starting to get an annoying buzzing/vibration from the dash area. Seems comes on when in race mode and certainly quite pronounced when I accelerate. I reckon it is the sound actuator thingy.. It happens intermittently..

Anyone else having this rather annoying problem?

Thanks G

Getting back to the conversation about the R. Should I order one? It would replace a Type R fn2 and be a 2yr lease

I get vibrations at low revs in D when accelerating in race mode, but it doesn't happen if the gearbox is in S. So I keep it in S thumbup

i think we were already back on that conversation. Not quite sure you're going to get a balanced answer that helps you. This is clearly a thread of supporters, and then some trolls. You're going to get 90% yes and 10% no way go buy a merc as they're better, or whatever. Not sure it's going to help you in your decision. What i would say is get it done now, as not only is there a big waiting list, but also VW will pull the deal at some point (my view before the end of the year, and maybe very soon indeed) and the ones at the tail end might not get honoured as they usually run the cut off on registration date rather than order date.

I'm thinking of going for one of these on the lease deal. I'm reluctant to specify any options except for DSG (essential for us) and white paint but am wondering about the ride on 18s and whether DCC is worth specifying. I have seen and sat in one which was already sold but doubt I will get to test drive one. However we did hire a new A3 Sport on holiday which is vaguely similar I guess and enjoyed it other than wanting more power.
