Well, Apple have finally removed the Classic iPod from the Store. I can totally see why they have done it as most want everything to be on one device but I loved having something that was just the right size, tons of storage space and had great battery life.

Also, I think it's a shame that Apple no longer sell anything with the clickwheel, that was a fantastic interface.

I guess I'll have to look after the one I have now!

Thanks for the heads up! Might have to investigate getting hold of a spare given nothing else seems to match it for size/capacity...

Again one of the posts where Pistonheads scores.
I wasn't aware of this and I too will seek one out. If I can get a 6th generation 160GB that should be enough to carry all my music on it.

Wow, I remember all the fuss when these first came out. Never been an apple fan boy myself.

But its the end of another technology era. Another what was back in the day a technological breakthrough now cast aside to gather dust and be forgotten about.

If you'd bought Apple shares to the value of the iPod, rather than an iPod when it was launched...

Nah, it'll be worthless and unuseable as iTunes wont support devices older than 2 years old...

My 5th gen iPod (iPod Video) from 2005 still works with iTunes so I imagine the Classic has a few years left to run yet.

However the battery in it is shot so was thinking of replacing it with a Classic to use in the car, obviously I won't do that now smile

My 120Gb one is slowly dying which is a shame as I like to carry all my music around in one place with me.

It is a shame Apple are finally killing the Classic off because I haven't found a decent replacement which does what the iPod does, as well as it does and with so little hassle.

I don't want to stream all my music because I listen to my stuff in the car...I want storage!

Same, have mine in the car but previously used it for music.
I once dallied with an iPod touch but capacity was tiny. Advice then was you just need to manage your library..... err, no. I need something that will hold all my music!

I suppose we're reaching the point where iPhones can have similar capacity but I'd still rather have music on one dedicated device.

Touch goes up to 64GB.

They still have some classics in stores today... so if you want one, buy one quick.

That's a shame. Despite the increase in storage capability on smartphones I continue to use my 160GB iPod regularly. Somehow it seems to make more sense to have a separate device to play music on, plus I can connect it to TVs in hotel rooms to play films, connect it to my drum kit or leave it in the car.

Been pretty reliable on the whole, must be 7 years old now.
Same here. Mine crashes sometimes, particularly when you skip a few tracks. It then needs a hard restart. It also takes much longer to connect at start-up than does my iPhone.

This is the thing though, I have a smartphone so I don't need or want a touch. However, I don't want to keep music on my phone because of storage space and battery issues.

This is why I liked the Classic so much, it had a huge capacity(I have 80GB of music and audiobooks), a decent battery life and most importantly it was simple and really good at doing what it was supposed to do, play music.

I think I will go and get a spare alright, just in case.

I keep my iPod Classic for exactly the same reason. It lives in my car smile

I may also go and buy a spare one. I'm dreading the day that Apple don't let it work with iTunes. The thought hadn't even occurred to me until someone mentioned it on this thread. My iTunes is pretty locked down as my iTunes PC won't connect to the Tinternet frown

Don't update iTunes on that PC, and you'll be fine.

I was considering an iPod for the car... then discovered that for £10 delivered I can have a 32GB Sandisk Cruzer USB. Works exactly the same in the headunit, and works out a lot cheaper.

Luckily I have 2 160GB Classics. One in the car, one in the house. Wouldn't be without one as they are great things.

Was toying with the idea of 128GB SD Card for the car (Mk7 Golf) but unsure if it would take this

Anyone know?

Regarding possible loss of iTunes support, I've got an iPod Classic which has never seen iTunes - I used Winamp from day one, and then switched to MediaMonkey last year.

I've only got an 80gb so though it's not got all of my music on it, it's got enough. Been with me for years and fits in my FatMan valve amp doodah.
Another one here going to have to buy one before they go... cheers for the heads up!
Though mine syncs with iTunes, I buy my mp3s from amazon, and simply drag them in rather than pay & download via iTunes.

I therefore have my collection on mirrored external drives for backup (unless the house burns down) but am not tied in to iTunes. What a luddite smile
