Hi All,

The Tuscan I (fingers crossed) will be collecting next weekend, is a 2000 W plate Red Rose and was red rose from the factory.

This is very early and could be one of the first...is there a list anywhere of when these started?

Cheers!

Chassis numbers always mean something it's part of the regulations.

This is what I have deduced from various sources.

Position
  1. S Northern Europe
  2. D Great Britain
  3. L (with1&2) TVR Engineering (SDL is TVR's unique identifier)
  4. ? Model and variant (C (Cerbera), S (Sagaris), E (Tuscan), F (T350))
  5. A First Variant (I assume that changes)
  6. 1 Fixed Digit
  7. ? Engine variant (6 (Speed-6 4.0) or 7 (Speed-6 3.6)
  8. A Fixed
  9. x Check digit
  10. W Year Code See table below
  11. B Always B
  12. 0 Always 0
  13. 0 Always 0
  14. 1 Sequential build no. for year Thousands (Usually always 1)
  15. 2 Sequential build no. for year Hundreds
  16. 3 Sequential build no. for year Tens
  17. 4 Sequential build no. for year Units
(14 through 17) is always the Build number as well as the unique chassis identifier)

(The Cerbera uses a variation of the above for some reason)

Year Codes

L 1990 P 1993 T 1996 X 1999 2 2002
M 1991 R 1994 V 1997 Y 2000 3 2003
N 1992 S 1995 W 1998 1 2001 4 2004

Where would info such as models be? is there a database? I would be keen to know how many RR's there were and what chassis numbers...if such a thing exists?

Good info Dave .....will be doing some detective work tonight smile

I know its regulations but this is TVR we're talking about .............regulations say that all cars manufactured after 2000 should have OBD2 ports but don't think they got that memo! whistle

1 Is country of manufacturer, so the Toyota Avensis has an S as it is made in Great Britain like the TVR.

2+3 Together are the manufacturer. So DL means TVR. There are after all, more than
26 firms making cars.

4-8 Are left free for the manufacturer to list model, variant, cataylsers,
engine, gearbox

9 Is a check digit. There should be a formula so the various numbers/letters add/multiply etc
make a check digit number, so if quizzed, the manufacturer can confirm if a chassis number is genuine.

10 Model Year Code

11 Factory. So B for Blackpool, but somebody like Ford has multiple Factories in UK.

12-17 Are left free for the manufacturer to ID number the car. TVR start each model year with 001000 (and so there are some 002000s in the TVR glory years 1997-2000); where as Lotus use letter in position 12 and 13 to identify the the body (coupe/cabriolet) and market (RHD/LHD etc) for the car, then use 14 to 17 as ID number.

During my rebuild I found dates all over the place. The chassis has a plate on the cross member below the one with the chassis number stating when it was built. Mine had 9th jan 2000. Other parts of the car had dates up to march 2000. Is the chassis number put on to the chassis at the last moment the car rolls out of the factory and therefore a better measure of production date?
I think there were 2 or 3 Dev / press cars in 99 and customer cars were started to be made in jan '00

Chassis numbers were allocated when the car was ordered. Chassis, bodies and engines are likely to have been started before order date depending upon stocks. Body painting and trimming was obviously dependent upon order specification either for a customer/demo or for stock.
