Audi A4 Estate - S Line Automatice Gearbox Fail
Discussion
Hi All, can you help or offer some advise please.
I have an Audi A4 Avant 2.0T FSI S Line Estate - This week whilst my wife was driving home the car made a grinding noise, she stopped and could not see any issues.
However when she re-started the car and put into Drive the car made a horrable crunching noise and by the time she got home (only 2min away) the car had dumped all the gearbox oil on the road and left a trail all the way home.
When i got home, i checked the engine oil which was fine (few...)and started the car with no apparent issues or warning lights, but when i put in gear (Drive) and tried to move it, the worst noise possable came from the gearbox (not good) so i switch it off and pushed the car off my drive where it continued to bleed oil.
Is this a catastofic fialiure.....or just a hose come off.
Any advise welcome please

Here's how your box works.
My bet would be on a failure in the hydraulics cause the tension on the chain to be reduced, with it moving around inside and it's ruptured the gearbox housing.
NOTE: This is only a guess.
Probably not going to be cheap.

Thanks all for the feedback, very helpful.
Checked on line and cvt box is around £1200, but had a mechanic look at it last night who did some check and put his computer on and it said the clutch bearing thingy inside the gear box Was broken. So the box has to come out not matter what and hope their is no other damage, So it will either be £600 or anything over £1200 .

Whilst we all like to live in hope I have to go back to what I said before....if something went bang/crunch and then the oil came out there has to be a failure of the casing which puts you in the £1200+ bracket.Checked on line and cvt box is around £1200, but had a mechanic look at it last night who did some check and put his computer on and it said the clutch bearing thingy inside the gear box Was broken. Hi all, just to let you know the Gear box it now out of the car and my mechanic advised the oil filter in the box was blocked which in turn burst the feed pipe resulting in all the gearbox oil (6/7 litres) being dumped out.
Their is not damage/holes/cracks to the gear box itself from what he can see, however has suggested i get it checked over by a specalist as he did find some microscopic bits in the oil. So found a local company who can help (not cheep) who will take it apart and diognose any issues and confirm no further damange has been done.
Fingers crossed there is no damage and it can be put back together with the new parts (hose/filter etc) , if this works will save a lots of money but still very costly.
keep you posted and my fingers crossed.
