Thing is when you drive one all day every day you really don't appreciate just how fast these cars are.

However the one comment I always get is not how quick it is, but how bloody quickly it stops yes

Not really that surprising on a straight line shoot-out as Surrey Rolling Road have apparently dyno'd several stock F10 M5's and they are producing 580-590 bhp!

A remap would get 650bhp subject to the transmission being good for it.

I drove a GTR and M5 within a few hours of each other and although the M5 was ballistic in a straight line it felt like a pimped up 5 series compared the GTR which felt like a properly engineered sports/super car. On paper stats look fairly close and all the talk of GTR being "boring, drives itself, playstation" I went in with moderate expectations. GTR was outstanding, M5 would be pretty quick up and down the autobahn.

Dont think anyone in their right mind would expect the M5 to keep up in corners - the thing for me was i was shocked it kept up in a straight line....

Whereas slightly interesting, these comparisons are almost entirely pointless. This type of "race" is engineered to favour (relatively) the M5 - rolling start, straight line. In any real world test the GTR is noticeably faster - it puts the power down at low speed, brakes faster and will leave the M5 standing as soon as you get to a decent curve. Anyone who claims the M5 is faster than a GTR based on this video has a very narrow definition of speed.

However, unless you are a track regular (in which case either of these cars is hardly the best choice) the areas where these differences matter are very infrequent. On the road, the GTR suits those who like the traffic light drag race (and based on my experiences, there are quite a few people who do) but other wise you are unlikely to split the performance without seriously endangering lives.

Where the M5 excels is being able to deliver more than enough speed, control and excitement whilst also being able to comfortably cruise, carry 5 and decent luggage - these are precisely the reasons I traded my GTR for the M5. Both are great performers, but the m5 (for me and my lifestyle) is a better car.

You on the V10 M5? have fancied the M6 put just cant bring myself to the 10-12mpg redface

I know you dont expect a lot but that is just mental - currently got a E46 cab - 79mph on motorway other day for 150 miles - 31.5mpg smile -

The E46 is impressive economy wise but even at the speed the V10's will get 25mpg.

Besides, these cars are not built for fuel economy.

I understand that, I didnt buy the M3 for that reason, its just nice to know you dont have to fill up every 140 miles

I wish my V8 would, best I can get is at 75 on the Speedo and also spending over 30 miles doing 50mph through road works..

I have an F10 (V8TT) M5; before the GTR I had a V10 - fantastic car and made me realise all the downsides of the GTR.

Very happy with the relative frugality of the later model, but the old e60 M5 (and M6) always felt much lighter and dare I say it, more fun.

The V8TT is more economical than you might think, 'all' it requires is a little restraint.

In order of increasing restraint (or traffic)

I was split between the the GTR and the M5. I decided on the M5 as it was more practical for my lifestyle.

After 200 miles you feel exactly the same as you got in. My experience of the GTR was that even a 30 second ride felt like a ride at thorpe park.

The GTR is a two seater race car, the M5 is a family car.

Yes, the GTR gets attention from the girls, but women know what side their bread is buttered on. <Waits for the ensuing banter..>
