I haven't tried any of the turbo cars. Are they anything like the old supercharged V8? That was one of my favourite engines cloud9

No difference from supercharged except a hell of a lot faster. Probably easier to re map as well due to turbos.

it's more likely to hurt F-tyre R coupes and 911. I've always thought of Astons as being credible performance cars but never the best in an out and out dog fight. Astons are bought with a different part of the brain.

well lets hope Aston don't do a Bentley and shove an AM body on the running gear of the AMG-GT and call it a AMV-GT
Exactly. As far as Bentley and record sales are concerned, as a car buyer I have no interest in new Bentleys (Conti -_ Mulsanne is a different story) for that very reason. IMO, it would be the end of Aston Martin if they do what Bentley does (or it they drop the off-the-shelf AMG engine in an Aston platform -- not good enough). Regardless of how many cars they might sell, they wouldn't sell another one to me. That the Aston is NOT based on someone else's platform nor does it use an off-the-shelf-someone-else's engine was a major factor in buying my Aston.

Speedraser, whilst i agree with your opinion only wanting a "pure" Aston it is slowly becoming utopia. Aston on its own is not in a position to develop a competitive sportscar. They will always be the last marque in the queue when new technology is developed by the OEM suppliers who are taking over more and more of the actual building of the car whilst the brands become sales and marketing entities maybe with a bit of assembly.

That yellow M/B does look a bit short in the rump and a bit tall in the roof - or maybe it's a much smaller car than it appears - so the height in the roofline maybe essential. I know - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and I don't like it that much.

they need to sort the gearbox out,the combination of the current amg gearbox and a turbocharged engine means if you are used to the responsiveness of an aston v12 you will get infuriated with that press the throttle and wait for the gearbox to change down and the turbos to spool up.

which gearbox are they using ?

The SLS used the same dual clutch box (with some different software) as the Current Ferraris. But I know some AMGs still use a conventional torque convertor auto. I thought this new GT was using the dual clutch box ?

The transmission is a 7-spd dual clutch transaxle.

I think the car will sell well simply because it's the newest shiny thing to roll off the AMG assembly line. As for the design - it's an ugly car. There's no balance to the styling. And the fact that everyone says the rear resembles a Porsche speaks volumes about the poor design.

With its pricing in the ~150k USD/100k GBP range, I doubt it will take away from Aston's sales once the next generation V8V is released. Same engine, same transmission, more prestigious badge, and a far, far better design... AM won't be losing sales to this mess of a car.

Also, I find it hilarious that every video they've released with the tag line, "You need to hear this engine!" (or anything similar) always has music playing over the exhaust note so you can barely hear it. The only videos that didn't do that were the engine noise clips without video, which sounded boring at best, if not crude.

Having seen how pig ugly the current SL is in the flesh, it will take sales from that in the same way Jag stopped selling XKs when the F-type came out.

The SLS gearbox is awful.

I've never driven an SLS so I can't comment. I know it shifts more slowly than the more aggressively programmed Ferrari version of the same box which as DSG boxes go, I think is very good. It will indeed be interesting to see how it comes together in the GT, especially as commented by others, with turbocharging, because one has to assume it's the most likely box to be used in the next gen Vantage

Many people chose to take their SLS back to Germany to have the s/w reprogrammed by AMG. My friend did this and his car is improved but by no means perfect.

The implementation of the box in Ferrari is like night and day; much, much better.

good, that auto in the 5.5 turbos is miles behind the zf 8 speeder, never mind the good dual clutches out there.
