Just been to the petrol station ,the car fired up spot on until i left the petrol station .Its hunting the fuel pressure gauge on the regulator is going up and down and its running very rich ,10 to 11 afr .confused

My tacho and and mileometer has not been working for a while, since pressing it a number of times i have a very loud clicking noise from under the dash top.

What now ?

Are you able to plug in to your Emerald and check the readings? I believe that Jools generally installs them using Throttle Position as the main metering element, and so it would be a good idea to check that this reading is correct first. A sensor or wiring issue here (even if the plug pops out) could cause this issue.

The fuel pressure will surge up and down as the engine tries to cope with the over-fuelling, as the fuel pressure is related to the manifold pressure inside the plenum. As the engine goes to stall, the vacuum will drop in the plenum which will raise the absolute fuel pressure.

Thanks for your help ,I promised my self never to connect a lap top to my ECU ,it spells disaster .

It just feel like a loose wire ,like its not telling the ECU what to do . Its still running at 10afr.

No Worries Daz - it's probably something basic, as it is a relatively simple system and there aren't many sensors that can make it go that rich. Basically it is throttle position sensor and coolant temperature sensor, unless it is mapped using Manifold Pressure (pretty unusual for an Emerald).

The throttle position sensor can show 100% load if it were to fail, and the coolant temperature sensor could indicate -40 Degrees Centigrade in case of failure. By failure, I also include the simple case of the plug popping off the sensor!

If you plug in your computer, just don't touch the maps! All you need to see is the live data for the system. Check that the coolant temperature is plausible, and that the throttle position moves in a sensible range as you press the throttle down. The engine doesn't need to be running for those tests.

If you engine is metered using a MAP sensor, then you can only test that with the engine running. A warm engine idling normally will show about 7-8 PSI (0.5 Bar) of vacuum.

Daz, it must be simple.

Carefully check the connections on the throttle pot and airflow sensor.

I believe the throttle pot will make the biggest difference if there is a dodgy connection.

Lambda connection? Depends whether you are closed or open loop?

That's it from me.

Try texting Joolz.

Jools is around - I had an email from him at 13.30.
He is rumoured to be on his way to the Pod tomorrow, so why not text him tonight and see if he can swing by yours on his way - it's only about 10 miles off his route - and test it for you.
Good luck mate - we need that car A1 for October 1st, as lame excuses will not be accepted.
