R56 Cooper S noise

So i have had my Cooper S for around a month and i love it.
But...
Its a bit quiet! I suppose that is the curse of the 4 cylinder turbo engines of todays hot-hatch. The pops and cracks are entertaining at slow speed or in built up areas where the sound has something to bounce off, but they are not very audible when pushing along a country road.
The engine and exhaust are similarly quiet, when at full throttle a decent throaty noise can be heard, but if threading it along a country road its all generally a bit quiet.
I don't want to fit an aftermarket exhaust that makes it sound like a 90's vauxhall nova with a baked bean can for an exhaust and a pair of tights where the air box used to be. But a bit more volume from the exhaust or induction would be much appreciated. What are the best options? Don't want to spend a fortune either!

I think MINI have made the exhaust note less obvious at higher speeds so that the 'refinement' is better on motorways etc. I prefer it this way and don't miss the noise on A road blasts particularly. (Having said that on a long motorway drive I would like the whole car a little quieter.....)
I reckon an exhaust is your only option unless you fancy trying this.....

You may be right about motorway noise, although my commute doesn't go near a dual carriageway... #I think MINI have made the exhaust note less obvious at higher speeds so that the 'refinement' is better on motorways etc. I prefer it this way and don't miss the noise on A road blasts particularly.
