My 90 year old father had 4 front teeth removed 7 days ago and he is still in a lot of pain and on a diet of soup and paracetamol. Do dentists take into account a person's age when they perform extractions? I think at his age the healing process must take longer and 4 extractions in one go is heavy handed and is just a money saving exercise.

As an individual dentist, my understanding of the NHS tariff is such that they would earn more extracting teeth one at a time.
I.e. 4 x Band 2 procedures as opposed to one band 2 procedure.

So my hunch would be the decision wasn't financially driven.

Please let me know what you do for a living so I can make derogatory comments too wink

If your 90 year old father has no major health problems, there's no reason why the 4 shouldn't be extracted together. Age in itself is not really a consideration. I have placed implants in the mouths of 90 year old patients for example.

That way it's done and dusted. Front teeth are very easy to extract, I would say it was better for your father that way.

He could have pain for a number of reasons and this may have happened even after having only 1 or 2 teeth out.

Have you let them know he is in pain?
