Does anyone know of a site listing the allowed locations of police speed traps? They do have to be in certain places don't they?

I've tried to google this and only found fixed camera sites.

Thanks

The police are 'allowed' to place speed cameras on any road at any time. Just loom at a UK road atlas and that will show you the road network, that's where the police can and do carry out speed enforcement.

What are you referring to?
Static cameras? (Not run by the police)
Camera vans? (Not run by the police in general)
Police cars/bikes?

Police cars operating guns and camera vans. I thought all these had to be in approved/listed sites, hence sat navs ping them.

Absolutely not. They can be pretty much anywhere you can imagine. There is also no requirement for them to be visible in anyway, and so can be hidden behind walls and hedges.
Each station will often have constantly changing "target areas" based on complaints by local residents. You can never be sure where a car/bike will be.

Ah, so you thought you could argue on a technicality if you get a NIP?

i.e. the camera wasn't in an area where they have those nice signs telling me to expect a camera, or my SATNAV never told me there would be a camera?

It's so unfair being caught speeding like this .biggrin

Nope, more just wanted to know if it was a camera car or not. I mean there was a chance the copper could have been doing something worthwhile... Yeah slim chance I know.

You mean like apprehending somebody in the act of breaking the law?

Are you the kind of person who, if caught shoplifting, would still say the same?

Ah, catching rapists, murders etc? How about potentially stopping someone losing a love one due to someone driving too fast?

Nobody is a perfect driver and TBH I get fed up with drivers who seem to need these detectors so they can go and deliberately start speeding - there is no other reason for them - unless they are crap drivers of course who need to go back to basic training where they did not speed because they would have failed the test if they had

Avon and Somerset post theirs:

http://www.safecam.org.uk/CameraSites/camera_sites...

I presume it's an official site; it might be more accurate to say someone posts Avon and Somerset's!

Well because good drivers will drive to conditions which are increasingly out of line with the posted limits since cars and roads are getting better while speed limits are getting lower.

Also, the lying hypocrites running the speed camera racket know that richer pickings are made just at those places good drivers have identified as where they can get their toe down a bit, despite the pitiful low limit.
