American Werewolf in London!!

Easily and indisputablly THE worse endingto any film ever made. I remember my friend and I sitting in stunned silence for a moment then looking at eachother and both shouting obscenities on how completely ridiculous and abrupt the film just cuts to the credits.... Just, BAM!!! Done.
Are you sure that you're thinking of the correct film? He gets shot, turns back into a human and it ends. Beyond adding a cliffhanger of him having bitten someone I don't see why it needed to go on for a second longer?
No need for anyone who hasn't watched it (that would be me) to watch it then.

It's been out for 33 years. Were you a bit too busy?

Probably.

There's quite a few films of that age or even older that I haven't seen, and I daresay a couple that I have seen that you haven't. I shouldn't think I would ever have wanted to watch that particular film anyway, but none of the people who have spoken about spoilers have mentioned a time limit, so it was more a gentle hint than anything else.

I did think about spoiler tags, but given the topic, age of the film and that I was replying to a post that specifically mentioned it |I felt it unnecessary

Exactly. Where do you draw the line? Casablanca? Battleship Potemkin? It's reasonable to think giving away the ending of a 33 year old film isn't going to constitute a terrible life wrecking spoiler.

Draw the line wherever you please, it's not something I care very much about, and am surprised that you formed any impression other than that.

Indeed, a perfect unhappy ending. Was he supposed to get better and marry the girl? I wish more film makers would be brave like Landis...

I know what you mean about spoilers, I’ve had a few spoil things for me, so feel your loss. But I don’t feel Negative Creep intended to spoil it for you. There is no need to watch it if you don’t think it’s your cuppa, however, before the end, there’s some good film making to entertain you. It’s dated and of its time but well worth a watch with a strange mixture of comedy, horror, romance, a naked young Jenny Agutter…. sorry, another spoiler… great score…

My nomination for a ruined ending to a good film would go to Schindler's List.

Take a ghastly true story, film it in a raw, visceral way, then, just so the audience doesn’t go to the post movie meal feeling too upset, add a couple of scenes of overly sweetened maudlin sentimentality. A trait of Spielberg who can’t help himself double coat a layer of Schmaltz to many of his films endings.

The Truth about Emanuel.

This got terrible reviews largely because the studio tagged an extra ten minutes onto the end.

If the story ended where it was clearly meant to, the whole thing wold have been cast into doubt by what was clearly meant to be the last line and, thus, would have been fantastic.

I love the film, but largely because I choose to ignore the tagged on 'happy' ending.

My Sister and her friends were going to see this at the cinema when it came out, this was the following conversation between her friend Laura and my mate Gordon.

Laura: it looks great, i've avoided all the advertising as i don't want the movie ruined.
Gordon: The ship sinks.
Laura: fk you for ruining it, no point in seeing it now. (storms off)
Everyone else in the room: stunned silence

Back on subject, the worst ending i've seen in a while had to be Spielberg's remake of War of the Worlds. All the st that happens then you find out everyone including his son survived. This might also be on par with A.I, another movie spielberg ruined. You can actually tell where Stan Kubrick s script ended and Spielberg turned into a family movie (aka where it went st).

Von Ryan's Express. If they had removed some of the track from just outside the tunnel, the German train would of crashed off the bridge, instead of seeing the missing part and stopping.

To be fair, American Werewolf is one of those films where the journey is better than the destination. It's like saying, I'm not going to watch The Day of the Jackal because I know de Gaulle didn't get assassinated.

That ending was supposed to set the scene for the sequel, which unfortunately never got made.

(I say unfortunately; I could be wrong - who knows, the sequel could have been absolute ste, as are most films with a number 2 on the end.)
Absolutely correct. I assumed for years it was meant to be deliberately vague in a kind of sixties way, before finding out it was because they thought there was going to be a sequel.

I tend to find neatly engineering the ending of a film for a sequel in such a way tends to guarantee that a sequel will not be made.

Sphere.

A reasonable film with sci-fi and psychological thriller elements, ruined by the worst film ending I have ever witnessed.

Signs, the one with Mel Gibson, I watched this many times and think it is utterly fantastic right.

Suspense, primeval fear, well put together, good plot. Then bang ruined at the end.

Did somebody say Revolver?

I made a point of watching it yesterday. Can't help but feel there's a good film in there, somewhere, but it got lost in the editing room... I'm no great smarty pants but few film plots have ever confused me (they're never that complicated, really) but that thing left me BAFFLED.

Still, it looked good. Very comic book and before comic book really came into vogue.
I watched this on a random one not knowing anything about it and it seemed ok from memory. I might watch it again.

The only film I can think of being exceptionally poor towards the end is Belly (which I'm sure most of you won't care about). Nas was awful. Whoever decided to cast him as one of the main characters needs their head examined. The other rumor was that they ran out of funds and had to scrap the ending and it shows.

That being said it's quite a well shot film if possibly a bit dark.
