Hi all ,3 weeks ago had a second hand engine put in my 120d( timing chain) ,just noticed that after being run for a while ,there is a Vapour coming out the oil cap area.Vapour is the only way to describe it,its not steam or oil.

Taking it back tomorrow to the company that did it
.I have also seen from the stalk indicators that they have overfilled the engine with too much oil...that can cause damage? Need some heads up info ,incase they fob me off.

Also have had a situation of losing water but thats another issue.
Truth be told ,regret paying for this engine should have just scrapped the car and moved on...

That might just be something as simple as you need an new o ring for the cap (or a new cap.)

Compression test.

An oil overfill might cause fuming, but it's also a fine sign of a worn engine.

Mysterious coolant loss may also be a HG issue (again, compression test will reveal all).

Fumes from the cam cover with the cap off is not unusual. But fumes when it's on and the engine running indicate a problem with the crankcase ventilation system at best, or a serious blow-by that the ventilation system cannot cope with at worst.

Motco if that was the case ,could you lose water with that problem?

At best you have a coolant leak and an oil overfill. At worst you have a head gasket failure and/or a badly worn bottom end. Either way it's not a good job, avoid using the car, have them collect it and have them rectify it.

No, in that scenario the two problems would be separate. It's hard to judge whether the fumes are significant without seeing them but the poster who said take it back is right. A 'proper' engine should not be exhibiting these problems.
