On to possibly the longest race of the season.

This will be a test of engines.

I'm predicting a merc 1-2 again.

I can quite imagine a wry smile on pats face during that interview.

It will be interesting to see how much this was holding merc back

Just what Merc need, more power to pull away.....

I suspect Lewis is going to Pole to flag this one.

Typically flawed rulemaking. By all means, raise the maximum number of gear ratios to 8, but there is absolutely no need to force everyone to use 8 gears. I guess it just made sure nobody could re-use an old gearbox design - they just had to spend more to design/buy in a new one...

Do remember that most of the rules were set by the teams/engine manufacturers or at least they were consulted at length.

I think the 8th gear thing was a bit of a safety net in case they found that the engines didn't perform as well as they do. Do remember we've had 7 speed boxes for some years.

I wonder what Merc's side of the "they got their gear calcs wrong" story is..

It'll be interesting to see how many cars run out of fuel as by time this is the longest race of the year. We'll get an idea of pace by the end of FP1 but there's a chance that this will be a full 2hr race especially if there's a safety car, which there usually is, especially if Alonso sweet talks Kimi into crashing into a wall.
It's been funny that after all that kerfuffle at the start of the year, we've only had a few mentions of fuel here and there in the races since. Certainly we haven't seen anyone crawling to a halt in the final laps like people thought would happen.

What are the chances of gearboxes being designed which have 6 ratios which work and 2 ratios which will be so lightly engineered and slimmed that they could never be used. But they will be there in the box, so legal!

After two poor races Nico needs a good one this weekend.
I suppose you mean by his driving standards, but coming twice two races in a row is pretty good by most people smile

I'd love it for the race. A thunderstorm during a live night race? Would be nothing short of spectacular!

With modern H&S they'll stop the race within seconds and spend 90 mins brushing the water away.
Funny you should say that. The MotoGP race under the lights at Qatar was postponed 24 hours a couple of years ago because racing in the rain under lights is considered dangerous because of the glare the lights cause on the wet track.
