I went searching for some drive chain play as it is noticeable when pulling away.

My box was rebuilt 500 miles ago (It is not that). I suspected the diff itself on loose diff brackets. The diff has a tiny amount of play. seems acceptable and the diff brackets are tight (I have had this one before).

The driveshaft bolts are all tight, however, I noticed some play in the CVs. I measured this and it is 2 degrees of play between each wheel and the diff. There is also a small amount of vertical play on the driveshafts.

My CVs have done circa 7000 miles on one side and about 1000 miles on the other side. They are not Lobro, or purchased via one of the TVR parts suppliers. Thinking now perhaps you get what you pay for..

Interested in comments on what others have found.

Thanks,

Matt

I fitted genuine GKN ones on my old chim, had no issues after 20K miles and many TDs.

I have a pretty bad on off throttle clonk on the 5.5 and this seems to be in the diff.

It's only done 37k ffs!

I need to do mine too.

There is a specialist in Coventry so I'll take one of mine off and take it across to make sure I'll get the right ones.

Is this too much play?

That's a fair amount of play alright. Are you getting much shunt in the drivetrain when you come on and off the power?

Dave if all that slack is in the drive-shaft assy then the CV's are well fked eek play in the joints should be barely detectable in the hand and the splined joints (drive-shaft to CV) should be a mild interference fit i.e no slack wink so you have problems there frown

Isn't that play in the diff?

If so, mine does that!

Hi AV8. My CV play looks similar to your vid. Up on the ramp I can see this is play between the wheel and diff so definitely not significant play in the diff.

When I replaced my 'cheaper alternative' CV's on one side due to really excessive play in them I replaced them with the same sort (DERRRR!) The old CVs simply fell off the splines on the shaft. I did have to beat the new ones on though. Unfortunately I confused myself and thought that I was replacing the originals so ended up buying the same failed ones. The recently replaced side that has done less than 1000 miles and still has a load of play.

I am just going to drive the sodding car for a while and put up with it. Have a few major jobs planned for Christmas so will sort then and try some 'proper' CVs.

It may well be that most of the play is in the splines.

Slack in the drive shaft/ CV joints.

You can just about see the output shaft from the diff and it hardly moves.

As you say, well foooooked! angel
