Guys, bit out the loop here as not need a suit for work for a few years.

Whats in fashion and whats a social business no go right now?

Any links to decent outfitters, specifically for shirts as well....whats a decent tie style??

You should never stray from the single breasted simple suit in a plain dark colour.

If you're on a budget then M&S are good value and nicely cut. Avoid "youth court specials".

Shirts. Double cuff, plain white. And FFS no button down collars or short sleeves. Please. Lewins do five for £100. Ditto ties.

For shoes, again if you're on a budget then John Lewis do excellent black leather brogues for £69 which last every bit as well as £400 worth of Barkers.

Keep it simple, and remember fashion is temporary, style permanent.

I've just tried on my old suits. Only two fit...but one is a 3 button suit. It's from Reiss and feels so good but I heard 3 buttons are a faux pas now?

This pretty much:

The one on the right that is. The one on the left is very staid and unfashionable. Try any high street outfitters and ask specifically that cut, don't get palmed off with any of the older cuts.

Once you've got your suit, get to a decent tailor who will make it (and you) look its best

I popped down to MS outlet this morning. None of the suits fit me! 38 too tight. 40 too loose!

I gather 3 button is too "yoof" then?

Are you having a laugh? It's for the office - I have no idea where that would be worn.
Soovy's advice is sound, especially if on a budget.

3 button is a classic style. If you're long in the body, 3 buttons is good. Fasten just the middle one. I always viewed 2 button as a bit 'old man'. That said I have a mix of 3 and 2 button single breasted suits. I wouldn't describe any as yoof court specials. I think to have them described as that, they'd have to be overly skinny cut, or stupidly narrow lapels or a bit shiny. None of mine are like that.

What ages a suit for me at the moment is turn ups. Having said that, I was offered turn ups on the last suit I bought. Didn't go for it though shortens the legs.

Ah, okay, I'll keep the 3 button Reiss as I really like it...I feel like I'm naked in it!

Never a fan of patterns...shades of grey are it for me!

What about ties? Thinking of just getting some subtle blue, red and yellow ties and sticking with white shirts.

I view shirts as disposable...whats good but cheap?

Good advice if you're in your mid 50s, nothing wrong with barrel cuffs.

Charles Tyrwhitt shirts are pretty good value. Stick to white and blue single or double cuff cut away collars e.g. click.

Bicester Village outlet - 4 shirts for £80 (+ normally £10 if you sign up to join up their mailing list). Shirts seem to last well, selection can be a bit off but you can get the basic ones without any issue in most sizes.

Um, 2 button jackets are currently in. If you really care.

Edit: mind you, probably best to ignore my fashion advice even if I do like to see what's going on online as I typically dress like I'm about to mug you before going rock climbing.
