Croatia - where to go, what to see etc
Discussion
The other half has talked me into going to Croatia on our summer holiday next year, somewhere I've never really considered before or known much about. Completely different to my list of potential holidays; Snowboarding, New York, Ibiza and Iceland, but I'm all for trying things.
Looks like we'll be going for 10 days, starting in Split, ending in Dubrovnik, with no plans as yet on what happens or where we stay in between.
So, any recommendations?
Not fussed about staying in luxury, more about doing and seeing things, although would be nice to have a few days to chill out somewhere. Also have no idea about how long to stay in each place.

I'm just back from a 7-day visit there (as part of a wider Euro road trip).
We visited Opatija, Lovran, etc - so a bit more North and quieter than your bigger resort plans.
Pula's good for a day trip, and Istria in general is great for foodie stuff (best olive oil you'll get, Motovun for truffles, etc), but you need to prepare for that as these places are small and tucked away. Some good and affordable wines, too - Malvasia, for example.
Lots of easy and scenic walking, too. Some unmade roads selected by the satnav, so I wouldn't want to do it in a low-slung car (we had an LS400).

Croatia - it's like Italy but full of Germans.
It's a beautiful place. I went there on a peacekeeping tour with NATO in 2000. I've been meaning to go back ever since. Split is a fantastic city with plenty to see and a drive up the coast to Trogir is well worth it. If I go back (and it's on my definite to do list in the next couple of years with the wife and baby daughter), I'll be heading to Trogir.

Get yourself inland a little on a boat from Sibenik up the river to Skradin and the waterfalls beyond in the Krka National Park - only accessible by tourist boat but worth it. Was there sailing last year - there are over 1100 islands off the Croatian coast! Will go back again at some stage.
I'd also recommend Trogir (the old town has UNESCO World Heritage status). Viz and Hvar ("Var") are both worth a visit too - the latter's harbour reminds me a little of Monte Carlo but on a far smaller scale.

Cheers all for the recommendations! Will have a look at them more in depth.
As for the OH knowing where she wants to go - she doesn't . She's been told by a friend then looked at pics and decided its the place to go. They gave details on where they went but I like to look and plan (or ask internet people) myself as well.
I know this is a bit "brits abroad" but is much English used there? Don't mind learning a bit of language just want to know how much really and if it's easy to work it out when there.

In mainstream places, there's English spoken quite widely (Italian and German, too). Might be a different matter in small villages.
Don't even try the local language; Croatia is spelt "Hrvatska"! Scrabble must be a lot of fun there, too.
Even in villages you're ok, I stayed in Petrcane before which was about 20km from Zadar and they could speak enough English for me to get by - although that was combined with Polish and German in some places (don't ask!!)Don't even try the local language; Croatia is spelt "Hrvatska"! I spent 10 days there as part of a road trip this summer. I started in Split and it's a lovely place to visit. Bit of a party town but also has some very nice restaurants and things to take photos of if that's your thing.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is an amazing place to visit. One of the coolest places I've seen. I was half expecting a T-rex to jump out on us as the scenery looks straight out of a Jurassic Park movie.
Rovinj was beautiful but it's right at the top of the country, quite the drive from Split.
A lovely country with a massive diversity in landscape
