I've been catching plenty big spiders all summer. These things are big and can fairly run on wooden floors. I sweep them into an unused food recycling caddy and decant them in the garden. There was a huge one living in the gas meter at one point.

Edited to say: I've got 3 since I came in from work tonight. Came in at 6. So that's about a spider an hour so far!

Apparently putting conkers in the corners of your room can put spiders off from entering.
Conkers contain a substance called Saponin, which repels spiders and other insects.

For the love of god when is this going to end, I keep getting invaded by these mutant spiders on steroids.

Sitting on the couch and I thought I picked up movement in my peripheral, nah it's nothing. Catch it again this time more prolonged, turn round and this huge bd is heading towards me at speed on the seat back next to mine on the couch at shoulder height.

After bouncing off the ceiling grabbed the Raid nearby and sprayed that mofo only to watch it disappear down between the cushions...ok not good.

Got my torch and managed to locate it staggering about under the couch mind blown on Raid...complete onslaught with magazine ensued until I couldn't lift my arm anymore.

I'm going to make a coffee and pray for an end to this madness.

Yes - another 3" wide monster is under a glass on the floor about to take a walk outside.

A dozen of those in the house this past fortnight. My better half caught one and said it was bigger than any of the others previously. I was surprised to see she was right when I checked the spider.

Apparently some poor women lost a finger after being bitten by a False Widow. Nasty sods. See picture of same species in one of my earlier posts here.

The same thing can happen from any bite, it wasn't because it was a false widow.

The news item mentioned that particular species.

We have a kitten who has made it her life's work to torture and then consume every insect in the house and a fair few in the garden too

It did irritate me just a bit at 3am today when she cornered a moth on the dressing table though..

Yes, but that wasn't the reason she lost the finger. She got a bacterial infection. The False Widow angle is completely irrelevant.

Or by open doorways & windows to deter them. We have conkers and no spider problem which is a god send as I hate the really big ones

This is why I dislike cats. Nasty sadistic creatures.

We have a jack russell that hates anything that enters the house, so any spiders, flies etc that come in, he gets. It makes up for him not doing as he's told 99% of the time.
