I also remember Keke being interviewed a few days after the accident at Zolder.

He said that when he drove out of Zolder the place was eerily quiet & he drive past Gilles' helicopter where he had landed it that morning.

That was, he said, when Gilles' death really hit home.

Thanks for sharing that, I had never seen that before; I started following F1 in about 86.

I always love the Watkins Glen story:

11 seconds fast in the wet on Friday. 11 seconds. Of such great days legends are made.

Totally agree.

Nigel Roebuck obituary:

I'd also suggest younger members search out more info about Gilles.
One quote stands out to me - Gilles had crashed:
Did you run out of road?
No, I ran out of lock!

Keke alway said Gilles was the hardest bd he raced against but totally fair.

Sorry for the very O/T post!
I know it's O/T but just look at this for car control:

The car, the Ferrari 312 T5 of 1980, was hopelessly outclassed by the ground effect cars run by most of the DFV powered teams and the turbo Renaults but Gilles drove the wheels off it nonetheless.

Not forgetting his awesome drive in the 1981 Spanish GP in the awful handling 126CK.

He led home five cars who were, realistically, quicker than him, by using the superior straight line speed in that dreadful car that handled like a pig in the corners ye lulled away on the straight.

He shouldn't have won that GP. He did because he knew exactly what to do with the ca & where to plant in the corners.

The first five cars, including Gilles, were covered by 1.4 seconds......

He should have his own thread really because he was, in my opinion, one of the best ever.

He will never be forgotten.

One bit of that should be read by all drivers:

"Two races earlier, at Monza, Scheckter had clinched the World Championship, Villeneuve honourably following him over the line, declining to keep his own title hopes alive. “I’d given my word,” Gilles said, “and I don’t break it.”"

I agree we need a Gilles thread.

I wouldn't say he was the best driver but he was IMHO the fastest driver ever to drive a race car.

As they say - some drive race cars but some are racing drivers.

Amazing, I just get back from 24 hours away from the internet and there are no new Alonso rumours or theories.

Impossible to believe.

And don't forget a good argument, every thread has to descend into an argument after 2 pages. It's the rules. hehe

Well to be fair, it's usually the opening salvo of an argument.

Mind you the true Pistonhead Masters can argue on their own without outside intervention...

You're not the first, and certainly not the last to associate "Alonso" and "24 hours" of le mans in the same sentence. The problem is, If Button does jump over to the WEC, will there be any room for Alonso in one of the teams, or will he be stuck if F1 for another season??

Wonder if he'll ultimately miss the boat - only a couple of years ago he was the next great thing, wasn't he?

I could see him in a 458 for a season if he needed to.
