Easy to change to the "normal" keyboard layout. I think in Mavericks its a simple setting, earlier versions need a keyboard map.

Talk to me Goose.

I bought a new rMBP and they've actually printed the # symbol on the keyboard now. I blame Twitter for that.

Just set the keyboard to a British layout. Works in both MAC/OS and Windows under bootcamp.
Confuses people who need to look at the keyboard. But if your fingers know where the keys are then you'll be fine.
Also, if you use a proper keyboard plugged into the USB port it'll operate normally as well.

That £/# nonsense really annoys me. I'm a web developer and need that # symbol all the time.
It wouldn't be so bad if the was a genuine lack of available keys but what the hell is the point of that key next to the 1, with a +- and funny S symbols on it? Why can't the £ be there, along with the €?

Doesn't work though for the built in MB keyboard - mine's set to British (as stated originally) and the @ " symbols are in the "wrong" place

Sorry, my mistake - I hadn't booted into MAC/OS in months. I've just checked, and it is in fact "British - PC".

Bingo, that's exactly what I was looking for, thanks! Now is that persistent setting i.e. when I log in will it know I've chosen that "PC" input source or do I have to click it each time? Any way to make it the default input source?

To answer my own question, I could just remove the "British" input source and only have the "PC" version available

Oh cool, I bought a MP 3 months ago and that doesn't have it on the keyboard.

With your keyboard set to "British-PC" you'll find the # just to the right of the ' key, on the key with | & \ on it.
Basically, just look at a regular UK keyboard for reference. All the keys will be back where you expect them to be.
Just don't look at the Mac keyboard and you'll be fine.
Also - if like me you plug in an external keyboard at work (1985 IBM buckle spring if you're interested), then all the keys on that will continue to be correctly mapped.

Yeah I know how to get the # just pointing out that the graphic was not printed onto the keyboard.

Exciting I know smile

The mac os and keyboard is great for accents, symbols, diacritics, etc. though, even if you have to hunt for them if you don't use them every day.

Yes, I believe that will do it. Mine is certainly persistent.

If anyone's interested, if you are running Windows under BootCamp, go to Control Panel | Region and Language | Keyboards and Languages | Change keyboards..., and then select "English (United Kingdom)"
If you're running Windows under VMFusion or Parallels, I can't help. Although I believe the MAC/OS keyboard settings are inherited.
