We have a whole bunch of insurances for the car and house etc. Paying ste loads for all of them.

Does anyone have a good broker?

Brokers as such don't exist in France. Use Les Furets or Assurland on the interweb to get reasonable quotes. And don't forget to send a registered letter to you insurer two months before the renewal date cancelling the policy or you are by law shut in for another years.

The two month period has been changed by the Loi Chatel, though as ever in France there are still a few administrative hurdles to jump through - Assurland isn't a bad site as it explains (in French) the cancellation issues and even gives you a draft letter to send to your French insurer under "résiliation" loi chatel.

As Lowdrag says, unless you cancel youir insurance at least two months before the renewal, you are committed to it being renewed automatically. So insurance companies don't send you notice of the new premium until you are within that two months and thus committed to renewal whatever the cost.
The loi Chatel modified that so you can cancel the insurance within twenty days of the insurance company sending your renewal notice, which is supposed to be at least twenty days before it expires. As Trunnie says there are draft cancellation/resiliation letters on the net, if you change your insurer the new one will usually help with cancelling the old one.
Make sure that you're not paying a premium for things that you don't need, replacement car hire for example. Agents may add these features without consulting you. I have read somewhere that Axa agencies will match the Axa online quote if pressed.

I had a great broker when I lived nr Monaco that covered my cars no problem and sent me all the Green Cards etc - the prices were good and the service exceptional. They were based in Swansea - will dig out the details (it was a few years ago).
