Is it already rusty? Different treatment depending on that.
On mine, which weren't rusty, I removed them, got rid of any surface rust on underside and painted with zinc rich primer and silver top coat. In terms of the actual chrome surface, just keep it clean and maybe apply a wax like Bilt Hamber auto balm that has some good anti rust properties.
