The auto box is dim witted and robs mpg terribly. Manual is the box to have, but they've always been thinner on the ground for some odd reason.

Eta: I've owned both.

I agree with all you said but MPG on 330ci's are awful. I have a auto 330ci sport and I'm averaging 15mpg. Engine is perfect nick and full service history!
Are you sure the engine is in perfect nick?

15 mpg sounds very poor even for an auto.

Either, you are driving around in stop start traffic all day/lots of very short trips.
Or your brakes are binding
Or your engine isn't as healthy as you think.
Have you had your fault codes read recently?

Hmm 15mpg does sound a bit low but I don't know why I've got this idea stuck in my head that I really really want one.

Its going to be a garage queen anyway only coming out on the odd day as I have a wee connect to potter around in most days. Just need to find one in good nick and I'm sorted.

Perfect car would be a facelift 03 with HK ,heated seats and Bluetooth anything else would be a bonus.
Rare as hens teeth.......
Went to see a 52 plate one with the highest spec I've ever seen in one and I mean everything.
Xenon, sunroof, HK, Bluetooth, satnav, TV, heated seats, extra lumbar control,6 disc changer, rear electric blinds and somebody put working flappy paddles on it but my god it was rusty, on all four arches and along the sills, the boot was the worst. The garage said it'll all be fixed but I know the rust will come back with a vengeance sooner or later.

So the search continues.......

Does sound like there's something wrong. Real-world should be in the mid-20s

My 330CI Auto was 19MPG average, dipping to 16MPG average in winter. It is what it is.

The trouble with comparing MPG is that it depends very much on the kind of driving you do. If you live in London and use the M25 to commute your mpg will be disasterous. If you live in the North of Scotland and have a 30 mile commute over open and lightly trafficed A roads your MPG will be a lot better. It also depends on how you drive.

I've had a few of these 330 sport's, real MPG average is usually around 22 with a mix of driving.
The last one I had was a 2002 auto and on regular 400 mile trips London to Edinburgh it would average 27 mpg (cruise/c set around 80).
Sold that one ealier this year for £1600 it was a lovely car good spec fsh 160k miles.

Rust is the thing to look out for on these now, f/wings, bonnet, bootlid, try and buy one that has always lived in the south if you want to avoid rust bodywork at 10+ yrs old.

I had a 330ci Sport auto for two years, averaging around 26mpg, mainly on A & B roads, Still one of the cars I miss the most, I think they have aged very well.

I sold mine 4 years ago for £5.5k, pretty much fully loaded bar rear blinds, best colour combo of Sapphire Black with Nature Brown leather!

Could well be looking for one of these myself after putting my E36 328i Sport up for sale this week, hope I can find one not a million miles away, ironically all the ones I see advertised are either in Devon/Cornwell or Scotland. rofl
Really fancy a Clubsport, but all the ones that appear at the right money are Autos. frown

To be fair I do short stop/start journeys.

I bought an '02 330ci a few weeks ago for £1750. It's not perfect, but it's the best of a long bunch of clapped out ones that I saw. There do seem to be some bad ones about, all of which are described as perfect.

On a recent run to Wales it returned 36.4 mpg, mostly with the CC pegged at 75. It's averaging over 30 on my daily commute though.

What defines it as being a Sport? It's got the Sports package II and Sports suspension fitted according to the vin-decoder thing. Pretty nice spec considering - Heated leather sports seats, sunroof, etc

They have different front and rear bumpers + sideskirts, sport suspension, 1cm lower than the SE I think too, larger rear tyres and //M kick plates/badges in various places. In America the sport versions actually got a little more hp and I think CAR and DRIVER got a 330ci manual to 60 in 5.5 seconds testing that one (it had 235hp IIRC).

Seconded on the Alpina option. The gearbox performs better with the Alpina changes and greater control. The engine is fantastic, the price is peanuts. I say that as i have one. But do watch out for the long list of E46 issues, that you clearly are aware of. Keep us posted!

In which case you'll get ste mpg out of any car. I remember my father in law telling me that he only got about 250 miles out of a full tank in his Mk2 Mondeo 2.0 LX, because his commute was from Sutton to Heathrow at peak times. Something like 90 minutes to do 20 miles IIRC.

Mine's got all of that except that it's running on fake MV2s which are all the same size but given they've been curbed to buggery, they may just have been replaced because of a previous owners inability not to hit kerbs.

Damn the cheapest 02's in Scotland are around the 3k mark and decent ones are 4-5k.
I would love one at 2grand but after looking for ages I've no chance. I'm going to look at an 02 plate clubsport in silver later on today up at 5k but it's done 65k miles. It's got no options but the vendor has described it as being in perfect nick.
We'll see when I get up there.

An '02 clubsport in silver sounds like the perfect spec if it has a manual gearbox. They sound great too.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
