Replacement Lintel Questions
Discussion
I have opened up two doorways to become 1200 corridors.
1) Was an outside wall with a 50mm cavity - whilst I could use 2 conc lintels the one side is supporting flat roof timbers and I don't want a step in the ceiling.
Can I use a std 100mm cavity lintel and notch 50mm out the timber meaning it's only supporting 2" not 4" (joist hangars only support 2")
2)Is a 4" wall but is supporting flat roof timbers on both sides - again I'd like a flat ceiling so can I use a T shape lintel ? The issue being that they are designed to be on an 8" wall not 4"
I'm confident both suggestions will work but I don't want the Building Regs Inspector complaining
(I don't want to ask him until I know all the options)

I'm in now way qualified to answer your question but can you not just get a catnic for the 50mm cavity you have. I know when I was extending I had to by different ones for what was left of the old house and the new.
I'd looked in various merchants and hadn't seen any - just asked and one is on order - ThanksTA14 said:
Sketches would be really helpfull.
AIUI you could solve 2) by putting in a 6" x 4" horizontally and wrapping joist hangers around it to pick up the roof joists.
I'm kicking myself now... I'd considered an I section steel (well the Builders Merchant suggested it) but I couldn't see how we'd get it in.AIUI you could solve 2) by putting in a 6" x 4" horizontally and wrapping joist hangers around it to pick up the roof joists.

whilst you are only talking about a 1200 opening here ,
the lintel manufacturers state that the top hat style lintels should not have a direct point load applied to the flange, to meet their loading specs , a row of blocks would be needed first.
I would go with TA 14's suggestion , much user friendlier too.

I asked my Struct Eng about this - and about using conc lintels the same way.the lintel manufacturers state that the top hat style lintels should not have a direct point load applied to the flange, to meet their loading specs , a row of blocks would be needed first.

He said that he considered a row of joists a UDL rather than a series of point loads - I can't say that I agree.
