Amazed by those recommending to stop FF at 10, when 12 is arguably the best in the series.

Blue Dragon is quite similar to Final Fantasy.

could I throw the following into the mix?

Icewind Dale 1 & 2

and (even better)

Baldur's Gate (1 & 2)

I find the original Tomb Raider is still fun to play - I have kept our original PS just to play this and the original Resident Evil and FFVII

Before this, to me, video games were all about jumping on enemies to destroy them while collecting coins in side scrolling adventures..

Its because after 10, they stopped random battles and changed it to in game battles. When I got ff11 it just put me off massively. It took all the tactical fun out of the fighting.

Just for the record OP FFVII is still my favourite game of all time and is well worth a look. FFVIII was good I didnt like FFIX, FFX was a great game also.

As someone mentioned earlier, the Total War series is great fun. There are quite a few of us old farts from PH playing World of Tanks too. The games last a maximum of 15 minutes, meaning that I have time to get my milky tea, or refill my briar.

Also, pick up FTL. It's a very likeable thing.

If you've downloaded Steam you can get Ultimate Doom which is both games + just about every official map creates for the game for next to nothing.

FTL is very much in the roguelike (Nethack, Angband) tradition. When you are dead, you are dead.

If you are more into strategic RPGs like Ultima or Baldur's Gate, Wasteland 2 has just come out, and from the streams I have seen, it seems faithful to the old system. It's not cheap (£30) or small, and it will take a lot of work to finish:

XCOM enemy unknown is excellent turn based strategy, plays very like a board game with guns and aliens what's not to like smile

If you can remember the old hex-style wargames like Panzer General, try the more modern version, Panzer Corps. http://www.slitherine.com/games/panzer_corps_pc
