Jock, Jockanese, Sweaty

Why are these terms tolerated on PH ? They're no different to , , , spic, yid, wop, wog, kike, or any other of the thousands of unacceptable racial epithets that civilised societies no longer tolerate.

It has nothing to do with what's happening north of the border - it's about respect for your fellow man.

Please, sort it out PH. Show some respect for ALL members.

Pray continue Mr. Coward - or is it Mr. Wilde, I find it difficult to tell the difference in the face of such erudition.

Did you take lessons from Bernard Manning ?

After 17 years living and working south of the border, I've become a little jaded by all the "funny" comments engendered by my country of birth. I fail to see why it's acceptable to insult me by stereotyping me, either to my face or behind my back, just because I'm NOT a different colour.

I shall now await the inevitable "well why don't you fk off back to your own country" comment.

Towards the end of an 80's school ski trip to Austria all the kids began swapping their schilling coins for notes as it was rumoured that you'd only be able to change notes back into stirling.
Would you be kind enough to point out the spelling error within that quote, old chap?

Apart from a couple of capital letters missing from the currencies, I can't really see the problem...

...unless you are a septic, and you're spelling rumoured (wrongly!) without the second 'u' wink
"Stirling" is not a currency.
Odd, isn't it, that you're more concerned with the correct spelling of 'Sterling' than you are with the brutal stereotyping of our American cousins through the use of Cockney Rhyming Slang.

Presumably your crusade to "Show respect for ALL members" stops just west of Rockall when there are more pressing matters of vocabulary to be addressed.

Are you worried that you are about to become a Jock living in a foreign country and feeling a bit isolated.

Suck it up Petal. I lived in Scotland for 16 years, it's a lot worse the other way round.

I suspect it was my comment on another topic here that spawned this. OP called me a bigot which to be honest I thought was a tongue in cheek comment - couldn't believe he was serious.
I've never heard a Scot complain about the term Jock before. If I offended OP or others I apologize and will consider my use of the term.
FTR my grandfather was Scottish and regularly used the term about himself and his fellow Scots.

Stop being so precious. They are just words. They are not even insulting words.

I was rarely referred to as anything but 'Jock' in the Forces and I'll wager a goodly percentage of my friends have forgotten my christian name.

The question is where do you stop - ginger? gay? Use of the word gay? anything that causes offence? what is actually classed as an offensive word?

Following the equality act would be the best start, but that is full of perceived insults to those of different race, class, gender or caste... Size also, if linked to a disability, or causes a disability is a protected characteristic, pregnancy.... and even murkier if you then look at indirect discrimination.

I think it is a can of worms - the most offensive (in perceived by the majority of the population) are covered in the swear filter and happy to add more if others feel there are some missing that the majority feel should be there.... and if you won't say it to your gran, then don't put it here... though Shorpe remains!

I would support the filters PH already applies, the overly sensitive OP's post has managed to trigger 3 swear filters whilst leaving "sweaty" clear.

Calling him a sweaty is actually a term of endearment and much nicer than "that touchy scotch wker"..

Did I trigger a swear filter there at the end? smile

I had years of being called F.E.B. simply due to my accent by people who, upon learning my full name, suddenly became sweetness and light.

Can't get worked up about some precious determined to be offended Scottish git.

Well, it is topical, isn't it? Being offended by the word 'Jock' makes some of the 'PH First World Problems' thread entries seem entirely reasonable.
