Should I hang on to my E39 M5
Discussion
Hello everyone. Just wondering if prices are on the rise for E39 M5's. The reason I ask is I'm considering selling my E39 M5 it's currently being repaired. The thermostat and coolant temperature sensor switch is being replaced, also all the diff seals are being replaced and rocker cover gaskets are being replaced. I've got the itch to buy a E60 M5. Or should I just hang on to my E39 as some sort of classic investment of the future. I took the car last week to a garage selling a E60 M5 to offer as a px to be honest I was unsure what to ask for mine and he was unsure as what to offer for mine. What should I be asking for mine a 2001 Le Mans blue with 122,000 full service history. If the itch gets strong enough I may have to advertise with pistonheads but if it is a increasing asset well who knows?

Hi, sorry I can't remember your name but you came down to me to buy a sat nav unit last year. If you remember I was saying the same thing you are now when we had a chat. I sold my E39 M5 in October last year & bought an E60 M5. No regrets at all, ran the E39 for almost 5yrs without any trouble. For me the E60 M5 is on another level. The sound of the V10 is epic plus all the toys, what a car. Thanks everyone Fatmansv8
I would sell your E39 privately for a better price. I would say you are looking at 10k on top of your E39 to get into a nice E60 M5 under 60k miles.
Anyway you have the Integrale making money for you !
Cheers
Simon.
Rb5r half of £9000 don't think it would go for that surely. The car's in excellent condition bar 2 rust bubbles all stamped history, unmarked interior. If however it is appreciating at the rate of 1k per year it may well be worth hanging on to. The salesman did offer £6500 in the end to get the deal done. I had to pull out because my kids didn't like the brown/bronzey colour. Many thanks for your replies guy's

The current market for e39 m5's seems to heavily punish early models which tend to be sub £7k whereas facelift models (2001 onwards) tend to demand higher premiums.
I was following the market very closely and good facelift examples demand premiums whereas the crapper cars just don't seem to sell at all!

I'd say your car is worth at least £9k without knowing anything about it.
I think £9k is a bit strong, particularly on a part ex.They do seem to be going up though and may have done since last time I looked.

Even if it appreciates at £1k p.a. (which I doubt, given it's the wrong side of the magic 100k threshold), it'll surely cost you that in tax, insurance, servicing, storage, tyres, rust remediation, etc etc.
Any net gain will be negligible.
The main thing with the M5 is that its not a normal car, and cars with over 100k miles shouldn't be viewed with the same "disdain" as say a vectra with over 100k miles. Any net gain will be negligible.
Prefacelifts will always be cheaper because of perception. My 123k mile prefacelift will soon look like a facelift which takes away a lot of the issues people have. Yes it's on a v plate, and if it bothered me I'd just put it on an M5 plate of some description to hide this, but it doesn't bother me.
I agree angry dog a well maintained M5 even with high mileage will always be a class apart from regular car's.
No word of a lie my particular M5 has or does not lose any oil at all. After the inspection 2 service last year the oil level has stayed exactly where it was in fact I have never had to top up ever even before the service. Whereas my Lancia Intergale evo 1 loves oil and the wife's car a 2010 Punto is requiring top up every fortnight both have only 40,000 on the clock.
Thanks Fatmansv8

Seems like a uncertain market in term's of valuation for these E39 M5's. Some say £4500 other's say £8000 and some even say £9000 to £10000 at this mileage pick a price range and hope you get it seems to be the best option. I'm advertising next on pistonheads let's see what happens. Thanks
