Well, is it?

After all, it's only an Audi in a party frock with higher service bills wink

I read your post and thought "stupid poster" but on reflection your spot on.
If the V10 R8 isn't classed as a supercar then the Gallardo also has no place.

No.
In the same way that the Jalpa wasn't but the Countach was; and the Urraco's wasn't but the Miura was.

Regardless of the R8 bun fight, the gallardo isn't a super car anyway.

super sport car

it's the new class which fits the bill ;-)

to be super car now needs a >£250k price tag.

Super Sports car fill that 100k to 250k gap nice

then 250k to 600k is a super car

and over 600k is a hyper car.

Does that make a Performante a supercar? Most were over £200k list.

My view is that whteher something is a super care depends on who is looking at it.

Most non petrol heads wuld class the Gallardo as a super car, because of the looks and the badge. Most non petrolheads even call my Evora a supercar, again isuspect the shape has a lot to do with it.

As for the R8, i think most non petrolheads wouldnt call it a supercar because it is very obviously an an Audi who are a manufacturer of mianstream volume cars.

Speaking as a petrol head. IMO the Gallardo is a supercar, it looks like one, it is pretty swift with a great looking and sounding V10, it has Lamborghini on the badge and it is often yellow or orange smile

It is being replaced by the Hurracan, are we about to argue that the Hurracan isn't a super car either?

they may be a super car, but does that make them a 'supercar'

I personally class the Lambo as a supercar but not the Audi, simply because of manufacturer. who would not rather own a Lamborghini over an Audi (no disrespect at all to Audi, who make cracking cars, but not Lamborghinis)

How would it be if the Audi had been badged a Lamborghini and the Gallardo an Audi - would we think different then?

I think not, because the R8 is too obviously an Audi, you would need to change the lights, the front grill, the lines of the bonnet etc

no not if the car its based on is under that.

bit like the 458 speciale

top of the Super sports imo

super cars needs wow factor and to be expensive like the old days, it's not just a badge, you cannot have every lambo just being a super car by default when they have the Aventador.

£100k cars are every where these days even 200k cars in the bigger citys, these are NOT super cars.

when you have cars like this Mercedes AMG GT 503bhp or the plus with 550bhp there def is a whole new sector the P13 is coming also.

The Gallardo has superlooks, superspeed, supernoise, superhandling, superprice, and a superbadge. It ticked and ticks all the supercar boxes.

The R8 V10 looks like a lowered A8 / stretched TT, and the Audi badge is midrange at best. It does not tick, and has never ticked, all the supercar boxes.

Lambo invented the modern supercar with the Countach. It owns the category. Along with Ferrari and a tiny number of others, like McLaren.

Top Gear, the world's most popular motoring show, regularly places the Gallardo in its supercar tests. Clarkson wrote many times about the Gallardo supercar he bought and owned and drove with his own money.

For additional, independent confirmation, take a look at the PH Forum "supercar" segment. The Gallardo is in there. It has its own distinct supercategory. Audi does not. The R8 does not. Subconsciously, the PH collective has voted and confirmed the Gallardo as a supercar, and confirmed the R8 V10 as not a supercar.

Aventador is in the hypercar category driving

same old debate what makes a super car, I would argue it is but then others have already highlighted factors that argue against it. only way to answer is to set a agreeably list of checkpoints to adhere to but not exactly going to get everyone to agree. to each his own, i like both the r8 and gallardo, think the r8 is fantastic value for money at the present. the gallardo is a brutal looking, dangerously fast, v10 howling, thrill seeking adventure which leaves me always wanting more. definite super car to my eyes.

deluded
People who say the R8 is a TT and that a 300k car is a hyper car have no clue.

These debates are pointless, the issue is subjective.

As I said, most people I know think my Evora is a supercar. I disagree with them, but that is their opinion. The same people don't think an R8 is a supercar (although they do like/want them).

It is purely subjective

the term supercar arose in an era when being fast was the exclusive reserve of cars of a certain heritage...

then came the lotus carlton, closely followed by the e39 m5 (5l v8 400hp) and the horsepower race began....

nowadays, sports versions of mainstream models hit 100kph in under 5s and the gtr chases hypercars.... the term is totally meaningless in the modern world.... even production numbers are so far in excess of exclusivity that that definition does not wash.....
