There is no definitive answer on this subject so just looking for the thoughts of others.

Does the FL2 become the runt of the Land Rover family, suffering from plentiful supply and being a bit long in the tooth?

Or, as the Land Rover brand as a whole grows, and the Discovery Sport and Evoque are priced quite a bit higher, does it offer a more cost effective way into the brand and stay desirable.

I have one, and as an overall package I think it's pretty good. The only thing I want and miss is an automatic gearbox. Trade-in value for my car has taken a real dip over the last 6 months, but retail prices (on the windscreen anyway) seem rock solid - something doesn't add up!

Thoughts on how part-ex values and dealer stock prices/availability will go folks?

I expect the FL2 to keep on dropping, it's being offered with discount as a run out model from what can see. Likewise the Evoque is now being offered with discount, I suspect a lot of the Evoque market looking for a bit more room will switch to the DS.
My biggest question is is the DS going to have solid residuals like the Evoque in its first three years, if so the inflated price being proposed at present is easier to stomach, can't get my head around the 40k+ needed to get a decent spec one being asked tbh. Might hold out and see what Merc are offering in way of inducements for the ML, or even the GLK due out next year before I pull the trigger on a DS. It just seems like a lot of money for not a lot of car to me.

I've not seen any discounts actively advertised for the FL2, there's finance deposit contributions but they've been around forever.

My thoughts were that the Discovery Sport in a decent spec being the thick end of £40k might not affect FL2 values at all as they aren't competitors and will perhaps appeal to different markets?

I'm torn, either way cost to change is king, but do I take a small hit on my part-ex now and get a good deal on a run-out whilst dealers are pushing them, or wait until the DS is launched and values fall, thereby getting a lower part-ex value...decisions, decisions.

Ive just bought an unregistered FL2 Metropolis to replace our faithful 56 reg SE.

The car suits our needs better than the newer car and secured about 13 percent off list. I got above book on a trade in on the old car, so all in all, a good deal.

. Looking through Autotrader, there are still some huge prices being asked for series 1 Freelanders, especially as Autumn looms large.

My own assessment is that values of good spec cars, and all the later cars seem to be pretty well equipped, will stay firm

Cheers for this, it's just what I wanted to hear - discounts off new cars and decent part-ex offers :-)

I'm in the same boat, happy with my FL2 but would like an autobox and would take the opportunity to go for a high spec model to get a pano sunroof and decent sound system as that's lacking on the lower trim levels.

Had a fully loaded HSE auto before and couldn't believe the difference when given a manual cloth Basic one as a loaner during servicing, there is a world of difference, so much so if I'd tried the manual first I don't think I would have ever bought one. If you are not sure sure about the DS at least get a later spec FL2 with auto, you won't believe it's the same car.

Having said that, the production line closed a couple of weeks ago and there are not that many left.

One dealer I spoke to said that most Metropolis cars were specced by Land rover and delivered to dealers, rather than specifically ordered by customers as production drew to a close.

Just to add another dimension to this discussion; the Discovery Sport will be launched with the existing FL engines, the more efficient euro 6 units won't be available until later on in 2015.

. I suspect some canny buyers of the new car will wait for the more efficient engines to become available.

The canny buyers maybe, but look at the typical person driving around in an SUV, I reckon they probably couldn't tell you how many cylinders are under the bonnet or what the displacement is.

I must be taking after my old man as I'd rather the tried and tested 2.2 in low stress 150ps TD4 form than a highly strung 2.0 in a big heavy car!

In terms of the FL2 I think I'm going to look into the Metropolis or HSE and see if an attractive deal can be had, had an XS spec loaner last week and as I have a few options on my GS it seems like £3k for built-in sat nav isn't worth it, may as well take the next step up and get all the luxuries.

Agree. Longest car ownership ever for us. Does what it says on the tin. Roomy, quiet, comfy, don't need to be precious with it. So she stays.....

Who knows about residuals, not sure they will tank for good spec, well looked after models. There's always a buyer somewhere......

Looked into this a bit, the first of the ingenium engines destined for the DS late next year are the TD4 2wd cheap company car target ones. I did hear the higher output SD4 replacement is a fair way behind that, 250hp twin turbo ones. If i do plump for a DS SD4 now I think I will have had it long enough to have let the replacement engines go through their teething problems, or if they turn out to be a dog, ala K series, then nothing lost. I just need to see one in the flesh before I justify 40k on one!

Private or back to LR? If you don't mind me asking what you paid and what you received back as top money and at what mileage. Could influence my DS purchase, as I'm a bit nervy about getting back into LR's and think the DS may perform similarly if the hype is to be believed.
