Ok so my trip to the station is 1.4m each way in my beloved e46 alpina b3s coupe. the temp gauge currently gets to normal operating temp at the moment due to the fair weather. however, based on experience, it soon wont.

leaves me wondering whether I should let the car idle on the drive before setting off (I know this is frowned upon in many circles)

or just let it be and hope that the engineers that have formulated castrol edge have done such a great job that my cars innards wont really notice the difference

If you're going to warm the car up, warm it up by driving not by idling.

If it's really 1.4 miles I don't understand why you wouldn't just walk it. Unless you can't, of course. If that's the case, just drive the car.

Cycle? It'll get you fit too.

Get in and drive. Gets my vote.

you're right I should but im not getting in and out of 2 sets of clothes for that and cycling would be almost as suicidal as walking

Clothing is no excuse unless it's raining. I've quite happily rode bicycles in a suit when I lived 2 mile from the station. Even when it did rain, I just chucked on waterproof trousers and jacket that would fit loosely over my suit and take less than 15 seconds to put on.

Seriously, unless you are physically unable, cycle. 1.4 miles is nothing, you will save on petrol (cars are very thirsty when cold, especially an Alpina!) and you will soon start to feel better as your fitness improves.

Failing that, get a moped. hehe

You could cycle 1.4 miles without getting lycraed up, its not a prerequisite

If you love your car so much why leave it at the station and risk door dings for the sake of less than 3 miles? Just walk, you'll do it in half an hour

That's about the same distance I have to the station in the morning.

I walk.

Very rarely I need an umbrella.

I read it that OP can't walk because there's no pavements. In which case get a scooter/moped, cheaper parking too.

Start and drive it gently. It's pointless and actually harmful to idle for no reason before driving.
Btw, I tend to find anything over 0.5 miles irritatingly boring to walk so I'm with you and it's nothing to do with being lazy (I would rather run/cycle if feasbile but it may not be in this case).

Its a shame you cant walk it, personally I wouldn't drive mine that short of a distance all the time, just like I wouldn't leave it in a carpark all day but then I'm incredibly precious.

Why not buy a cheap and cheerful 'station car'?

Shoe consumption may increase though hehe
