So I was walking along the beach with my daughter at Crawfordsburn near Belfast earlier, and couldn't help but feel a bit sad for the thousands of jellyfish lying dead all over the beach.

What causes this, possibly washed ashore during a storm? Not seen it before.

I'm no Beachologist, but my initial thoughts were that perhaps they'd all just invested too much, emotionally speaking, in an independent Scotland?

I guess its not entirely localised if you've seen it too rich. I always assumed jellyfish would be dead against an independent Scotland. I guess it just shows that you can't judge a book by its cover. Do you think perhaps there is a salmon amongst them?

Every so often, PH provides a proper gem of a post. This is one of those times smile

I was going to say I've also seen it happen on Welsh beaches. Harlech though. As a kid we'd dare each other to stand on them as they were "huge" to us.

I'm always curious but never bothered to investigate it; do they sting when dead?

Yes, if they're fresh.

I've seen this on several beaches.

There was a particularly high tide just over a week ago (well there was in Scotland so I presume there was in NI too) which might have left them stranded.

Perhaps they were planning to come ashore & vote Yes,but got lost (or followed the wrong sturgeon)

Some of these replies are excellent!

The jellyfish ranged from about 15cm to 40cm across, all partly transparent with brown inside. Do all jellyfish sting?

There may be some exceptions, but it's a good working assumption that they do!

I remember seeing loads of purple ones dead on a beach years ago. Hundreds of them. Was a very odd sight.

My parents used to take us to Cornwall each summer for our holiday and some times i remember going to Trebarwith Strand and the whole beach being covered in them.

It was always after a very big thunder storm which much bring them in far enough for it to happen.

It was horrible as my parents would expect us to still swim in the sea and they would be everywhere.

10 years later they took us to Egypt to do a Padi diving course. I started off fine but half way through the first week they took us down the beach to dive in the sea and I had a panic attack and couldn't continue.

I blame it on those jelly fish infested seas all those years before.

I'm 29 now and just got back from Cornwall and successfully swam in the sea again : D

The weirdest sight I've seen on a beach, near Dornoch, were hundreds of dead birds.

Couldn't see any reason for it, no oil pollution or major storm, just loads of dead sea birds.

I stopped feeling sorry for them when I realised they didn't have brains. They're apparently more of a plant than creature.
