A bit of background information to start off with. I'm stuck in a dead end job which I hate with a passion, however I've worked my self to near madness to put away a large sum in my eyes to better myself.

So I'm just looking for information on the industry I'm looking to get into, which is none destructive testing NDT. But I'm at a loss on where to start, which courses I need etc. I've looked on the net and I'm lost in all the information. I know that doing the courses needed doesn't give me the right to a job right away. Quite prepared to do some unpaid work on one of my days off to get some experience.

Any advice from people doing this job or any other will be great.

Why don't you find some companies locally who do NDT and go for a chat? Do you have anyone in your network who can help with some contacts that work at engineering companies?

Asking what skills are needed locally will help you decide what training certification you'll need to get a job.

Good luck!

I'm on near as makes no difference the same journey. Look for apprenticeships with manufacturing companies. These companies may have departments specifically for what you want that you could move into. Or you could gain the skills you need to move into a company that does. Casting and forging companies will probably have departments for this as well. There might be a 3D printing company somewhere in the country that also does this. But they will be VERY few and VERY far between for the time being.

Head down to your local college and ask about engineering courses. You'll be looking at mechanical engineering or metallurgy courses. I've completed a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering (also referred to as a technical certificate or ONC) over the past two years and even though I've been wanting to do electrical (now on to my HNC) I have done some mechanical principles, some studying into materials and some destructive and non-destructive testing.

Good Luck!
