How do you feel about the creed that underlies that kind of society? It's often expressed thus;

You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as we are.
You're not to think you are smarter than we are.
You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
You're not to think you know more than we do.
You're not to think you are more important than we are.
You're not to think you are good at anything.
You're not to laugh at us.
You're not to think anyone cares about you.
You're not to think you can teach us anything.

Maybe a life of quiet mediocrity, plodding on without ambition and without any incentive to be better than average while still getting much the same as everyone else has an appeal, but it seems stultifying to me.
Where do you get all that bullst from? Like some people trample over anybody to get on.You only have to look around to see how unequal our society has become.

Educate yourself, why don't you. It's a common idea in Scandinavian societies. You could start here.

There was an article on the Beeb website last week that norways sovereign wealth fund is big enough to make every person a millionaire. Rich country indeed.

Just found the article, you're right, it's NOK millionaires. Still not a bad position for the country to be in tho ;-)

Is that due to tax issues? If ever there was a compelling argument for a white goods runaround and a fast motorcycle it seems to be those prices.
No point owning a fast bike in a soviet state with such a hard on for speeders. Where are you going to use it? Fast motorcycles tend not to be that much fun when not ridden fast, they're just uncomfortable.

Personally, if I lived in Norway I wouldn't bother trying to get motoring pleasure, taking up smoking and drinking would be cheaper and more rewarding.

I don't see where this Soviet state on motorist's has come from, I hardly see any Police around Bergen and people regularly break the speed limit. It's no different to any other country on the continent. There are speed camera's dotted about but in the year I've been living here not had a single run in with the Popo!

It's really no where near as bad as people are making out smile

Just to add Jante Law as it's called doesn't apply in Norway. Denmark more so, but just because Norway is part of Scandinavia and have historical links to Sweden, Finladn and Denmark these 4 Scandinavian countries couldn't be anymore different aside from cultural differences, each country looks different the peoples attitudes are different and the societal rules different. Having lived in both Sweden and Denmark with my Norwegian wife I think I'm more than qualified to say this smile

Yet they all have the same sort of collectivist ideology which stems from that manner of thinking.

Look, I live here. I plan to live here for a very long time. My experience so far of Norway of which I've lived here for a year and have been visiting for the last ten is very very good, I would much rather live here in this culture than that of the UK that I have left behind. Not everything is perfect but my quality of life just by living here has increased ten fold, this country is well publicised as one where the people are among the happiest in the world......I know where I'd rather be!

Anyway this thread was not started to discuss the politics, social and cultural differences of another country whether you agree or not, so let's get back to talking cars! which is why this entire website exists smile

Sure. It is what it is, and if you like it that's cool. I'd just go with then and buy a Leaf, a Golf or a Tesla!

Norway might have some 'issues',related to certain types of socialist tendencies like its attitude towards freedom related to car use.But having long ago decided to do what the Scottish didn't have the bottle to do and staying well out of the EU,collectivism/federalism obviously certainly isn't one of those 'issues'.

Having lived in Norway for many years, I don't like it, it is not right for me but it does work, my kids have a choice of passports and they both use their Norwegianoones, my daughter has her masters funded by a grant, with no fees, and my son is 23 with a house and an Audi A4,so it does work.
Cars in Norway are another thing, I had a few cars there, BMs and Volvos best was a Lotus Sunbeam, but I enjoyed driving a Fiat Panda, freat at 50mmph on a windy road. There is little point in having a fast car in Norway, its ones of downers you just have to look at the balance some things are very right there.
If you are car lover It has the cheapest petrol in western Europe as indexed to wages.

When I lived in Stavanger my colleagues at the time didn't have cars which would turn your head but they did have a massive house, some had a lodge in the mountains, and there were many, many yachts. If that's your sort of thing, no better place for it.

While it is true, Sweden has always tried to point finger at their Nordic neighbours telling them how much better Sweden is. The Nordic nations are bound by a blood filled history, and share some sort of a love-hate relationship, Sweden loves itself and the other nations hate Sweden smile

This is from a half/half Finn/Swede who has spent plenty of time in Norway and Denmark.

Anyway back on topic, buy a Swedish registered car and drive it a year, then sell and buy another.

Does not apply to motorcycles, though. Hence, since moving to SG, I have become a biker. No car.

It would be difficult in Norway, I think.

Also, in SG the tax rate is 15% or so. In Norway? No idea.

Better roads to drive slowly though.

I think I would buy something fun from another country and use it for 6-8 months and put it up for sale. Then do that once a year and you can try different cars and avoid feeling like you are being ripped off. Or if you have a relation in the UK/rest of Europe see if you can have the car registered in their name and you are simply borrowing it.

94 nok in Bergan airport for a large beer.
That's nearly a tenner :-(
Norway sounds like a right laugh. So they are anti cars, anti having a decent priced meal, anti drinking. Why did you move there?

ps

Get an Elise. There is nothing to go wrong. Or buy a slow old 4x4 and give up. Would be good in the snow at least.

got caught in a monsoon shower yet ?? hehe

tax rate in SG for cars is 130% car tax, + 20% port handling fee + 7%GST plus prevailing COE (i think about $70k at the moment) + the dealer's %age for profit ....

Yea Bikes are a chunk cheaper, especially Ducatti as many of the range are assembled in Thailand (within ASEAN trade zone so lower %age import duty)

Sadly none of that helps our scandihooligan friend!

At 16 I spent a month in Oulu on a cultural exchange - 20 London lads with 40 Finnish girls in a new ski resort in the hills...

One night we were talking about the rest of Scandinavia, where we were told, with no hint of sarcasm, that every Swedish bloke was gay and the only reason they still had a population was because the Finnish blokes loved impregnating Swedish women!

Best holiday of my life, once I recovered from the mozzie bites and the immense depression brought on by coming home and having to endure a couple of hours of darkness at night.

And Swedes would say every Finn is a bigoted drunk, and Norwegians are halfwits, and Danes are junkies, while everyone of the above says Swedes are stroppy and gay. smile
