Free, Elite for it's 30th Anniversary (original game)

Today, 20th September 2014 is the 30th anniversary of the day the world first experienced Elite, the 3D space trading and combat game written by Ian Bell and David Braben in conjunction with Acornsoft. From that beginning on the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron, the game went on to be released for most home computers of the time.

Celebrate by playing Elite again, for free. Thanks to Matt Goldbolt. the original BBC Micro version now runs direct in the Google Chrome browser. Or for Windows PCs, download Christian Pinder's Elite: The New Kind.

I don't know if anyone has played Oolite but I spent a few evenings giving that a go when i should have been revising; as far as I remember it was a pretty faithful reproduction.

I did it 30 years ago and I'll be doing it tonight as well!! At the moment I have the intro screen on my phone's browser, watching the spinning view of the Cobra, harking back to more innocent times sat in front of my Acorn Electron. I daresay if I could have accessed porn on the Electron, it would have been a difficult decision!!

Speaking of Acorn Electrons, I have my old Acorn Electron still. Complete with loads of games and a Plus 1 with a few games on that. Funnily, can be playing a game quicker than I could if I fired up my PC from switched off!

I regret never keeping anything when I was that age. I don't remember what happened to the Electron, just that it was treasured while I had it. My old man probably sold it for beer tokens.
