Another side effect is that dealers will no longer be able to use a car off the forecourt as a runaround without either re-registering it or using trade plates as a car in-trade is no longer taxed as soon as it's handed over to the dealer.

Going to be lots of car salesmen on the bus from 01 Oct.
Perhaps it'll hit the "private" dealers operating from side streets. The blokes operating from the front garden of their house ,posing as private sellers ,but with a few vehicles for sale ,but placed in several locations around the town centre. The "Arfur Daleys" of the back streets.

Just called up someone at the dvla and they have confirmed to me that if the log book is signed and dated before the first of october then the tax will not automatically be refunded

I don't have that much confidence in that neccasarily working, but atleast i have a recording of the call to the dvla confirm they won't cancel it.

I suspect they will find a very large number of cars which change hands on the 30th of september but somehow get delayed by several weeks before reaching them

So will you need valid insurance to tax a car?
No. And you haven't had to for a while.
Cool. Thanks.

I was just imagining waiting for an insurer to update a database before you can tax your car.
The bigger concern (for me) is the last car of mine I taxed (just under a month ago now) took nearly a week to list as taxed on the gov checking site. So, when I tax the vehicle, I'll print out a page to leave in the car to show it's taxed...

Why? What would be the benefit?

I'm not so bothered about that. As long as I have actually paid then I know that being stopped would just be an inconvenience. What it does mean is that taxing a car you have just bought before you drive it away is quick and straight forward. Just need a smart phone and a data signal. Much easier than seeing a car at a dealers on Sunday and having to wait till it can be taxed before taking it away.

I have just ordered a used car from a main dealer, which is presently sat at another outlet at present, and won't be with me for two weeks last Saturday.
They have promised me 6 months tax, subject to me accepting the vehicle so it will be interesting to see if it arrives, registered in my name before I have seen it and with tax on!

I did look at a new 1000 cc Pug 208, which has NO tax... perhaps these new tax systems will become redundant if we all move over to these smaller low emission vehicles... THEN what will they tax instead to make up the shortfall?

Whoosh parrot needed?!

There's irony in needing to keep a bit of paper in the car...having just removed the bit of paper from the windscreen.

Also, it's a minor annoyance being stopped, however if you don't have this proof, you'll get a producer which is more hassle.

Why? Did you make a joke that I missed?

I guess if it is ironic that you feel the need to keep a piece of paper in the car. I can simply access the email I get when I tax my car from my phone.

A producer is inconvenient, it's not the end of the world. It is the price we pay for the fact that some people choose not to tax their cars.

I'll take that risk for the benefit of being able to tax my car at any time of the day 7 days a week via the internet.

I'm going to be changing my wife's car in the next month or so and tax can be an issue. You go to a dealer and see a car but you want to take it there and then, however it's not taxed and as it's Saturday afternoon you have to come back in a couple of days. Not a problem unless you've travelled a long way to see it. This solves that issue for me.
