Cleaning the EGR valve and maybe fitting a new thermostat (if the current one is knackered) will help a lot if the car is a high miler.

20% is a bold claim. Without a remap I would be sceptical.

Even with a remap I'd be skeptical. OP why don't you ask the garage exactly what they do. If they can't/won't tell you then it's a load of hooey.

How exactly do they test the (up to) 20% gain in MPG? Why is it so 'magical' that they cant explain what they do?

This smells like a fool and their money...

Change diesel fuel filter

use very good, fully synthetic oil and change regularly (8000 miles) with fresh filter

change gearbox oil, change diff oil

check tyre pressures, perhaps change tyres to more economic ones

let the tank get near empty and then fill with nigh-grade diesel (e.g. v-power stuff)

Dont drive like a tt

There you go, better fuel economy.

It sounds a lot like this: http://www.mpgtuning.co.uk/uk-first-99-pound_custo...

Are you sure its not an ECU remap? But then you seem happy to hand them over £99 without actually knowing what they are going to do...

Ask them if they can prove their claims under controlled conditions.

20% increase in mpg is virtually impossible on a modern vehicle in good working condition

however a service giving 20%* increase in mpg is very easy

*please note this figure is a maximum and was based either on one really sheddy car, or a vague estimate

Easy - They'll take off all of the M badges and make it 20% lighter.

Right...

dropped the car off and with all your piss taking, its actually very clever what they do.

German cars are setup to be "greener" due to the laws in germany in regards to emissions, the UK laws are not as strict as germanys. The car is factory setup to reuse some of the exhaust emissions to 1. lower the emissions coming out the exhaust, and 2. to reuse in the engine as air to spark the combustion.

What they do is lower the range which is allowed within the BMW software to make allowances for different countries regulations. So in doing this, they let more clean new air into the engine which reduces the amount of fuel being used as its got more air to cause the spark, in doing so, increasing the MPG and getting a cleaner sounding engine due to not using dirty air.

Comments please.

I think roughly translated that means the block off the EGR valve.......... Which means a remap to prevent the MIL on the dash illuminating, which means you need to tell your insurers about the change.......

(PS, if your diesel is "sparking" it's probably broken ;-)

i was waiting for that.

Basically, i think what he's doing is a very clever way, do some googling, you might be surprised someone knows a bit more than you LOL, guessing thats why he's running his own garage and I'm not.
